This brings to mind Truman Capote’s great bon mot about one of Jack Kerouac’s books

At one point, about a third of the way through this very informal and spontaneous account, Neil says he’s only rewritten one paragraph so far. This brings to mind Truman Capote’s great bon mot about one of Jack Kerouac’s books: “That’s not writing; that’s typing.”

And I might add that as a writer Neil Young is no Jack Kerouac. But Jack Kerouac is no Neil Young, either! If you like Neil’s music, you’ll probably enjoy this rambling, personal and very sweet story. You’ll forgive the imperfections (which truth be told I would lay at the editor’s feet, not Neil’s). I could have done without the description of how to put a penny on a railroad track and have a train come and flatten it—but then again I’m almost Neil’s age. Maybe this ritual of growing up in the fifties or sixties in North America is interesting to younger people who may never have had the opportunity. There is a lot of inside baseball about guitars and amplifiers that may also fail to excite the average reader.

Neil gets a little repetitive about some of his passions, including classic cars, green energy, and the degradation of recorded music quality with the advent of the MP3 format. He’s passionate and repetitive about his family, too, but I like that! One of his kids is a quadriplegic. There is a cast of friends and musicians on the scale of Game of Thrones, several of whom die of drug overdoses, and it gets a little confusing.

But the overall effect of Neil rambling on with no chronology about his life and music appealed to me.

Then again, I was bonkers for this man circa 1970, played all his songs, all the riffs, sang them falsetto. I haven’t kept up with his music completely, but it seems to me it’s gotten a little blander as he’s gotten more content in life. (“Harvest Moon” is an awesome song and album I must say.) But I’m happy for him!

Can you believe he wrote “Cinnamon Girl,” “Down By the River,” and “Cowgirl in the Sand” in one afternoon? “Down By the River” came to him while he was fooling around with another E minor song popular at the time, “Sunny.”

I loved the guy who read this. Sounded like my idea of what Neil Young should sound like. So did the guy who read Dylan’s biography, Chronicles. (I mean he sounded like my idea of Dylan.) Bob Dylan is a terrific writer by the way and that’s a peach of a book in every way.

Autobiography

This is such a cool book, and I think that it was even better with the audio version. It is read by somebody else than Neil Young but it still sounds like him in a way. It still has his words and demeanor. A really fun and thoughtful listen.
