I def. had to get the rest of the book after reading this free sample!

To me this selection of chapters is a pretty darn good clue as to how this writer writes. I definitely wanted the full story after reading the first five chapters. I read another book by this author first and it was a series, I have to wait for the final book to even be published so in the meantime I took a look at other things she has wrote. I wasn't sure this would be for me since it seemed to appeal to a younger group of people but as I said, after reading the bit I did, I am hooked on this author!! Would highly recommend her writing...all of the things I have read by her have held my interest and seem to not come down to a certain readers' age or things like that. Her writing just seems to appeal to a very wide variety of people and she covers such different things in each book and yet the ones I have read are so fascinating and good even if I don't normally read that type of genre.

This is just the first five chapters, but I enjoyed it enough to buy the three-book omnibus. I'm not sure I like the second book as much as the first one, so I would recommend others check the reviews on the other books in the series before buying the omnibus.

IDW Publishing really dropped the ball on the remaining volumes of Bloom County. 1-3 were excellent, but from 4 on you can't read them in Kindle Cloud Reader and on the iPad the resolution in really bad. I contacted the publisher and let them know.

Not your average inspirational quotes for sure! This book collects not just inspiring, but entertaining, thought provoking and sometimes even perplexing quotes from some of the greatest people that ever lived. These quotes are still applicable today!

The book arranges quotes by Nobel Prize categories (literature, peace, economics, physiology or medicine and physics) first, and by person second which I liked as it helps to connect and glance into the mind of a Nobel laureate as well, and I am not left reflecting on myself and a single random quote. Many quotes are directly from the Nobel Prize speeches, so you most likely have not read about them before. For example, here are some of my favorites:

"Don't be afraid of hard work. Nothing worthwhile comes easily. Don't let others discourage you or tell you that you can't do it. In my day I was told women didn't go into chemistry. I saw no reason why we couldn't."

"When I'm Bad is a milestone for Elise and Lucien."

Elise has always had a strong will, and what she wants she gets. She wants Lucien to let go of his tight control and give himself to her. But she might have pushed him too far this time.

When I'm Bad is a milestone for Elise and Lucien. While there are still more to come (hopefully) this is a pretty big deal. Sex is as intense as I thought it would be between them, physically of course, but emotionally too. For Elise, sex with Lucien is hard, hot, and a bit confusing. For Lucien, Elise's passion is consuming, her defiance frustrating, and her innocence surprising. Elise is unsure of her boundaries with Lucien and why she pushes them. She's wanted Lucien for a long time, and she seems perfect for Lucien's sexual appetites. But whether or not they can fulfill each other in every aspect remains to be seen. Lucien is allowing Elise into his life but not opening up to her, whereas Elise seems to be the one bared, literally and figuratively, to Lucien. Hot sex, massages, and restraints are a few of the ways Lucien uses to teach her what he wants and show her what she needs in When I'm Bad.

OMG!!!
You did kill me Kery! I'm speechless! I mean I would be BAD every day for the rest of my life if Lucien did that to me :D I can't even say huge grin because mine is off the charts right now :D
I loved how she keeps fighting him every step of the way, it's fun to see how they are both submitting but at the same time they are both dominating the relationship.
That emotional and raw moment of passion, was just yummy to say the least. It was the epitome of the tension that was building throughout the chapters. Even I was waiting for that like it was happening to me.
That was so damn HOT!! Completely worth the wait. And seeing how Lucien just lost control like that, PRICELESS!
He keeps waiting to show her that he believes in her, and her submission to him is nothing more than showing him she's growing and that she's more rewarding than she thinks.
It's so nice to see a man wanting a woman to submit, just so she can see her value :)

Moving Right Along...

Lt. Wilson is asked by Ambassador Abumwe to be the liaison for the Earth party of observers on the Clarke's latest mission: to negotiate a deal with the Burfinor for biomedical scanners, superior to the Colonial Union's, for five outdated starships. Abumwe remembers the fake Earth party from an earlier mission. Wilson is from the United States as is one of the observers from Earth.

It doesn't take long as one the earth party, the leader, is found dead and an autopsy reveals that it looks as if the Colonial Union killed him. It's up to Wilson to figure out what really happened before this whole thing blows up the Colonial Union's face.

Way too short

OK, these things are only $0.99. And they are well-written with a good deal of wit. But I finished the last one in 18 minutes and I'm not a real fast reader. At less than a buck maybe feeling short-changed makes me a cheapskate, but I do feel like the chapters are way too short.

Good Read, With Some Flaws

I will try to keep this as spoiler-free as possible.

What I liked:

- Keeps the overall story moving right along, while presenting its own self-contained story (although the story has a couple problems, as explained below).
- Good character development; Scalzi explores a few character relationships which weren't really fleshed out before.
- More Harry Wilson, which is usually a good thing. He's a great character in my opinion, and I love reading about his antics.

What I didn't like:

- Yet another "Problem presents itself, Harry Wilson uses a plot device from earlier in the chapter to fix it" scenario. This is getting a little overused at this point since almost every Episode with Harry Wilson uses this format.
- Yet another overly sarcastic character is introduced. These seem to be a staple in the Old Man's War universe, and another overly sarcastic character is brought on board in this Episode. To Scalzi's credit he has a lot of diverse characters in The Human Division, and I realize there's only so many character personalities out there, but this new character's sarcastic personality is unnecessary in my opinion.
- No Hart Schmidt. I think the "bromance" between Harry Wilson and Hart Schmidt is akin to Holmes and Watson, and it's a shame Schmidt wasn't there to constantly complain about Wilson's actions.

Overall I enjoyed this read despite its flaws, and I look forward to the next installment of The Human Division!

During the early to mid-’90s, Mr. Lyle worked as a data warehousing consultant on several large-scale, massively parallel warehouse projects. From this experience, Mr. Lyle helped found and grow Influence Software from 1996 to 1999 as a pioneering company in! the development of analytic applications. Integration drives IT value creation

A straightforward explanation of and good advice on enterprise integration. Integration is as yet poorly understood, but it is the key to agile and aligned organizations. Despite the positioning of large ERP vendors, effective organizations need to share information across applications, and this sharing takes place both within and across organizations. Schmidt and Lyle provide a clear explanation of what an organizational Integration Competency Center should look like and a reasonable way of getting from a center that gathers and disseminates best practices to more advanced approaches that feature shared services, centralized services, and even self service and automated integration.

Their insistence that integration is a separate layer and not simply a component or API to an application is a very important point, and one that is not always appreciated. Think of this layer as the structure that makes possible emergent value for an organization by

It would have been nice if the authors could have provided more information on certain advanced topics. Treatment of web services, business processes and orchestration is very thin, and these are the emerging value centers for integration. Semantic integration, the future paradigm, receives only cursory treatment. Complex event processing and content integration (which poses separate problems from data integration) are not covered.

Still, a must read for anyone concerned with effective enterprise architecture.

Architecture 101 for Integration

This was an excellent read and well developed concept. This book can serve as a reference for the aspiring Integration Architect, and those just seeking to broaden their understanding of the complexity involved in integrating systems and data architecture. This is not a "silver bullet" approach - the authors state that it will take years to implement and ICC; further they offer 5 models for building the ICC so that it can be adapted to most organizations.

For architects, this offers some great examples and illustrations (a picture is worth lots of words) - my only knock is that these are not available in Visio or PowerPoint for download.

For those of you concerned about an Informatica bias or propaganda, if its there, its slight - I do not recall any emphasis saying "use Informatica tools" for this task.

This will likely serve as a spring board for additional books on integration in the coming years - it provides numerous concepts, many of which can be expanded upon.

I think this book is a fantastic help for anybody from starter to more experienced managers. It gives a very good and structural approach on Competency Centers, and I successfully used it to create a Business Intelligence CC.

Not a bad christmas read!

All she wanted was a perfect Christmas...

This is the story of a woman trying to find her happy ending. Lydia hasn't had the best luck when it comes to relationships, something always seemed to go wrong until she met Stephen. Stephen seemed nice enough, stable and secure. Before she realized what was happening, she'd been dating Stephen for two years and had moved in with him & settled into a comfortable life.

Now it's December and with Christmas around the corner Lydia has convinced Stephen into spending it together at her friend's new Getaway Hotel/B&B but she had no idea that when she got there, she'd be snowed in and stuck with her boyfriend, ex-boyfriend and the hot handyman. Now she's got to figure out who and what she wants and quickly because Stephen's about to propose. Obviously, all hell breaks loose.

Lydia's a vivacious and funny character and she had me laughing at various occasions while reading this book. However, I didn't like any of the other characters much. I disliked Stephen from the minute he appeared, Jack was alright till his idiotic excuse for bailing on Lydia & Will, well I didn't know much about him to even form a real opinion. He seemed a little conceited to me, really. Lydia's friends were alright though most of the time they just got on my nerves, like Joanna for example. She wanted to be Samantha from Sex & The City and a clingy girlfriend at the same time and it just didn't work for me. Alex & Kate were alright but again, Jim was just annoying.

Despite my problems with the novel, I think Scarlett Bailey's a talented Chick Lit writer. Lydia is a fun, witty character so I'm sure Bailey could create more like Lydia. 'The Night Before Christmas', though lacking in Christmas festivities, was a magical read! The novel takes place in a - thanks to Scarlett's vivid descriptions - beautiful setting and while the book didn't focus on Christmas much, it did have a holiday feel to it!

I enjoyed reading 'The Night Before Christmas'. Sure, it may not be one of the best Chick Lit I've read but it's a good debut novel nonetheless. Besides, I'm a sucker for happy endings =)

A whole lotta action around Christmas!

I initially picked this book earlier and couldn't get into it. So I put it down and picked it up again today and was immediately pulled in. I didn't know Scarlett Bailey is a pseudonym for Rowan Coleman until today, but it just goes to show how versatile her writing is. I enjoyed this book as much as any other she's published under her own name.

Anyhow, to get to back to the book, Lydia thinks this year will be the perfect Christmas. She's always had bad luck when it comes to them, but this year, she has a lovely boyfriend and is going to spend it with him and her three best girlfriends and their significant others. Imagine her surprise when the one that got away shows up with her best friend and roommate. The addition of a sexy local only complicates things further. Lydia's dream of a perfect Christmas has been ruined, but has it really?

I liked Lydia quite bit. She was a bombshell but doesn't know it. She was thrown for many a loop but handled it well for the most part. In fact all of the characters were quite likable. There was no one person who was "evil." Besides Lydia and Will, Tilly, Jake, and Gracie were my favorite characters. Tilly and Jake are kids. They provide some serious comic relief. There's also an incident with a gigantic turkey that had me trying to smother my laughter so no one else could hear me.

To come to the point, this book is wonderful. I'm glad Christmas is coming soon, and if this time of year fills your heart with cheer, you'll definitely enjoy this book as well.

fun, easy read

Cute, fun, easy read. More of a 3 1/2 star read for me, but since there's no half ratings, 3 will do.

I enjoy a good seasonal read, but the problem is that while it's easy to find the seasonal part, it's a bit harder to find the good part. Usually holiday books have some sort of magical star or intervening Santa - thankfully this book had neither.
It did, however, have loads of British charm and hijinks. And while I loved the girlfriend friendships, the drafty old inn, the local pub and the leading man, I did not appreciate the editing errors. Missing words, really? How does this happen nowadays?

If this book was a bit less choppy, it would be a solid 4 star for me.

As war consumes the nations of our world in the year 2021, Navy SEAL Jacob Hunter is sent on a mission to Syria to apprehend a crazed terrorist leader armed with dangerous biological weapons. It’s a routine mission for a man who has spent the entirety of his military career fighting in what many have dubbed World War III, but his life is about to become everything but predictable.

As their mission unravels around them, Hunter discovers a curious trinket that belies all rationality and our understanding of the universe, but he is drawn to it nonetheless, bewildered by its uniqueness. Unable to control his urges, Hunter touches it, and in a flash of brilliant light and intense pain, the team is no longer in contemporary Syria – but in Ancient Rome during the reign of the emperor Caligula.

They stand dumbfounded, unable to comprehend the paradox they’ve created, but the bleak truth of reality soon overtakes their disbelief. The fact that they should not be there becomes obvious almost immediately, as does the thought that with every breath they take, everything history has worked so hard to achieve is at risk of unraveling. Staying alive suddenly becomes a secondary objective, superseded by the theory that their mere presence in Ancient Rome has caused irreparable damage to the timeline.

This won't be an easy task for Hunter and his friends as they will quickly encounter numerous Roman figures straight from his old history books, each with their own agendas, schemes and machinations, including the Caesar himself, who history remembers as little more than an insane tyrant who once tried to appoint his horse as the head of state…

Edward Crichton, a native Clevelander, lives in Chicago, Illinois with his wife, where he spends his time coming to grips with his new found sports allegiances. A long time enthusiast of Science Fiction, Fantasy, History and everything in between, he spends his time reading, writing, and overusing his Xbox. Until recently, Crichton had often hoped for a cat, but his wife decided to let him have a baby boy instead. Due in November of 2013, he and his wife could not be more excited. His Sci-Fi epic Starfarer: Rendezvous with Destiny, was released in April of 2013, and the latest book in his Praetorian Series: A Hunter and His Legion, was released in September of 2013. Crichton hopes to spend a few months bonding with his wife and newborn child before getting back into writing, but he still hopes to release the next book in the Praetorian Series book in the spring of 2014.

Who's the last Roman

I like history and time travel and I purchased this book on another authors recommendation. I was not disappointed. Set in the future, which is not going so well, the world is in constant state of war and in need of some good guys with skills

Edward Crichton creates an elite team of international warriors who are the best of the best. They are men and one woman of conscience, belief sprinkled with a smattering of faith. They are tasked by the Pope to make the world safer and set out on a very clandestine operation that catapults them 2000 years in the past, smack dab in the middle of Rome. Wait, it's not what you think, it's all different and for Jacob the main guy who's telling his story, he's going to figure out what happened. He has too, it's his fault.

Well written for this genre and was not disappointed, just wish there was more. It's an action packed page turner, easy to stay up all night, heart pounding!

Enjoyable time-travel read

The Last Roman begins in the near future, a little over a decade away, with the formation of an elite combat group whose purpose is protection of the Pope and advancement of Vatican interests. No, this is not a dogmatic or religious book -- Mr. Crichton's initial setting sees our world in the close future engaged in global war, fought by terrorists and proxy governments and ostensibly along sectarian Muslim/Christian lines. We don't spend much time in that future world before time travel begins. I hope that Mr. Crichton writes a prequel to this series, perhaps featuring the main character's father, that tells the story of how we get from here to there. It's an interesting premise as laid out in The Last Roman, and a story that I'd probably enjoy reading.

Once the travelers find themselves in ancient Rome, there's enough explanation of the time, culture and combat techniques that the reader won't be lost. Every now and then, I'd get impatient with too much exposition about theory of time travel, possibly because I'm a fan of time travel stories and it would have been difficult for any writer to hold my attention for a character-driven discussion of time-travel philosophy. That small nit-picked, overall the story does move quickly, there's a lot of action, and a bit of romance that stays firmly within a PG rating. For that matter, despite the regular violence expected with this type of story and characters (including Caligula!), the author conveys the story and action vividly, without a lot of mangled-meat graphic description. Don't misunderstand, this is not a YA book by any means, I'm just saying it's not one of those books with the soft-porn scenes or slasher violence that would make you cringe if your kid was sitting next to you while reading it.

I'm looking forward to reading the second novel, and give this one an unqualified recommendation for solid summer escapist reading for folks who aren't necessarily looking for realistic science fiction time travel, but are do want a satisfying time-travel related adventure.

A Quick and Fun Read, Keeps You Turning Pages

Had alot of fun exploring ancient Rome with a great cast of characters. Recomended for anyone who enjoys good dialogue, a clever alternate history, and a mystery worth solving. Definitely enjoyed the blending of modern characters thrust into an ancient world. Cant wait to read more tales featuring Edward Chrichton's Praetorians.
