Different than any other health book I have ever read!

I read a ton of health and diet books and this one was a totally different experience.

First thing I want to say is that a lot of the reviewers are implying that this book says that you should just eat a ton junk all the time and that is NOT what I got from this book. I got that you should eat mostly healthy, as much food as you want but nothing is off limits so if you do want junk go ahead. The theory behind that is once there are not "forbidden" foods you will eat normal amounts of them instead of having to binge on them when you finally break down and eat them. A lot of ideas in this book honestly sound scary at first to a seasoned dieter because they are so far from what we have always heard. I can see the theory of how this can speed up metabolism but am not sure if it will work for me, I am giving it a try though because I know this is a lot healthier than a lot of other things I have done in the past regarding eating.

The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is the language. I have no issues with swearing and I really am not a prude but I had a hard time taking the book seriously at some parts because of it. I did get what the author was trying to do but I felt that it undermines the information he is giving. There are some people in my life I feel would really benefit from this book but I won't recommend it to them due to the language, as I know they would be offended.

I got this book when it was free and I will definitely be watching for Matt Stone's other books to see if they go free as well and read them if they do. I also signed up for his free newsletter and am looking forward to learning more from that.

Overall I would say if you are not easily offended and sick and tired of feeling sick and tired from constantly dieting you should give this book a try. Also this is NOT a weight loss book, this is a book about returning your body to a healthy state after dieting.

Would have Given it 2 Stars, but there is One Good Argument

This book could be written in one essay of about ten pages, which would detail why you should listen to Matt, what's wrong with the all-or-nothing perspective regarding any macro nutrient, an explanation of starvation, a list of foods that you should focus on eating as much of as possible and a list of those containing omega 6, which you should avoid.

The premise is that you need to eat foods that don't contain large amounts of omega 6 and you should eat until you're bursting. This will increase your internal body temperature, which Matt hails as the best indicator of a well-functioning metabolism.

Matt deftly dismantles all of the most popular diets of our time, with the same argument: no matter which macro nutrient you are cutting out, there is a group of people somewhere in the world who don't experience heart disease, metabolic problems, and live long lives, who eat HUGE amounts of that exact thing you've been told will kill you. This is a solid argument and one I've thought myself.

However, Matt would be wise to use his own argument against the recent claims that diets which are very high in omega-3 fatty acids are "bad". Why? Before Westernization, the Japanese ate a diet which was very high in omega-3s and they lived long lives. In fact, many peoples around the world ate diets which relied almost exclusively on seafood and they were not dying early of heart disease and diabetes. Therefore, I say, take the first argument, apply it to this issue, and eat the as much omega-3 dense food as your heart desires. Maybe even pop a few fish oil pills.

I don't know of any people who eat diets that are high in omega-6 and don't have health problems. So that may be a great observation and something to take seriously.

Over all, the book is experimental. Matt has tried out the ideas in it on himself and his friends. They apparently work great (although the book wouldn't sell very well if it didn't say that...) However, we really don't know whether there are any negative side effects to his suggested diet and the writing quality in the book is sub par. Therefore, I felt that this book was a tiny step up from the nutritional column of a popular women's magazine and had the urge to rate it a two out of five. But the message of not starving yourself is pretty important and it has one good argument in it, so I gave it another star.

I wanted it to work!

I wanted it to work! I questioned on wether to really give it 1 star because I don't think it's a terrible idea BUT...

I started diet recovery because I had been dieting with no success for almost a year. The book made sense and I got to do my favorite thing, eat! I even sucked it up when my pants stop fitting, and then my new bigger pants, and then uhhh... it just wasn't stopping. I actually remember a few nights where I was up, crying, reading Matt's books and the sections that say to keep going. But I couldn't. I was becoming morbidly obese and despite wonderful 99 degree temperature reads and feeling good and getting on a good exercise routine... It just wasn't working.

The plan in this book just isn't for everyone. I don't know the science behind it but the reality is some people just gain weight easier than others. I'm one of those people. Luckily I also lose weight faster than most so I've found a manageable diet to get all the weight I gained following these books off. I've lost 50lbs and I feel amazing every day. I do feel the diet helped me build some muscle and that is nice.

The book did help me psychology in that I know now I can have ice cream in the house and not die and I can even get pretty fat and not relapse in my eating disordered behaviors that I've been in recovery from for about 2 years. I got to be fat again without all the self hate, but I also had to be fat (no I'm not 150lb girl complaining about an extra 10lbs, I passed 300 after reading this book, a weight I hadn't seen in 10 years.)

I need structured eating as much as I hate it, that it is my reality. I don't know when I'm hungry and when I'm not. I can't consume 4000 calories and lose or even maintain weight. Oh I so wish I could, I so wish I could delete my calorie counting app and give this book 5 stars and be relaxed, but if I do that, apparently the scale hits the 300s.

I really gave it a shot, I did it for 6 months, I eased up as I got less hungry, I did HIIT training 5 times a week. I slept a ton over the summer, but the weight never stopped. I like Matt's writing style, I don't regret trying it, but it just didn't work for me.

Very brief summary of Act Like a Lady. Think like a Man..

Exactly what the title says "summary" As I hadn't previously read 'Act Like a Lady, Think like a Man' It didn't really resonate with me as it needed more detail.

However now having read the full version Act Like a Lady Think Like a Man I feel it as a quick reference/Prompt book.

It was unique to see things through the eyes of a man. To be able to conceptualize the methods and intent. My friend recommended this book. At first I felt it was totally unnecessary because I have been married for 20 + years, what could I possibly take from this! I was wrong, I actually did learn something.

It gives you a glimpse into human nature, from a man's prospective.

Sweet But Not Saccharine, Wonderful Plot Twists

This lovely prairie romance will satisfy even people who do not normally read prairie romances (like me). It is the story of a young woman--Tressa--who moves to Kansas from the east coast in the late nineteenth century in order to attend a school for prospective ranchers' wives, a school which trains young women in skills they will need on the prairie--riding a horse, driving a wagon, branding and birthing animals, cooking for a ranching crew, and other domestic and farming skills. The school is delightful--a training ground for young women to see if they have what it takes to make it on the prairie. When they finish the school, they are matched with a rancher and marry (with the consent of all involved, of course).

Tressa learns to be not just a successful rancher's wife, but so much more. She learns how to stand up for herself, what love is and isn't, and what faith in God is and how to rely on Him. In the process of her learning these lessons, much goes on, including a mystery surrounding cattle rustling, interesting tales of the other character's pasts, friendships, and vivid portrayals of a simpler and in many ways, better time, in my opinion. The plot of this beautifully-written novel at first seems that it is going to be predictable, but it is not!

Since this is a Christian novel as well, the characters profess faith in a non-preachy way that fits in beautifully with the plot. Faith in God was a big part of life on the midwest prairie, and seeing how He fit into the fabric of almost everyone's life was moving. I started this novel and found myself unable to put it down; it was an escape for me to an amazing time and place, and I am grateful to have read it.

The BEST Prairie Romance I Have Read!!

I have always loved a good prairie romance. A HOPEFUL HEART goes beyond good and into great!
A group of eastern girls being taught on the open prairie how to be good prairie wives-- that alone snagged my attention, but once getting into the book you are opened to a world beyond the setting. The characters are real and alive, worming their way into my heart. Tressa, the heroine is a young woman searching for her place in the world and through each circumstance she must learn to stand strong in God. I loved her journey on all counts.
I can think of nothing I did not like about this book. I truly believe it is the best book by this author to date. The setting was vividly described, bringing me right there. The characters danced upon the screen of my imagination with a real life persona and the love story was sweet and complete with a lovely sigh from this reader when the book was closed.
Even the secondary characters were vivid in their portrayal and I hope to someday rejoin a few of them in another book. Please?
A HOPEFUL HEART will definitely be going on my best books list for a long time to come and is highly recommended!!

A story of healing and forgiveness

A Hopeful Heart is a gentle story of healing and forgiveness. The protagonist, Tressa Neill, is sent west to Wyatt Herdsman School as a dowryless girl. Her guardians, an aunt and uncle, believe that second best is good enough for their orphaned niece. The events that shape Tressa's life, as well as the lives of the other girls at the Herdsman School, run full spectrum from cooking for ranch hands to branding cattle. Sawyer's novel captures the essence of Kansas ranch life in the late 19th Century.
Since "Aunt" Hattie Wyatt's purpose in starting this school is to train girls to be ranchers' wives, there's plenty of matchmaking going on while the girls learn ranching skills.
In A Hopeful Heart, Sawyer has woven a tale of a loving God's plans for each girl's future. The reader gets to participate in Aunt Hattie's faith as she shares her beliefs with those around her. This novel is a sweet romance with a strong Christian element, suitable for tween girls as well as their moms and grandmas.

As a former corporate research scientist myself, I loved Mr. Lee's direct, clear approach to relaying what is and what is not known about LPR. Although not very much is understood about LPR at this time, he advises the reader how to stay informed about new developments.

Great technical information but not soloution

If you want to understand LPR, and I mean really understand it in detail, this is a great book. You'll walk away with a much greater understanding of what LPR is, the physiology, the chemistry, etc.

As I read it, I kept waiting for solution to LPR, but it never came.

Excellent source of information for LPR sufferers

If you have LPR there is a good chance you feel very frustrated with what the medical community has to offer. This book does a fantastic job of taking all the data available and presenting it in a fashion that is easy to read while still keeping the nitty gritty details. In addition to the book the author maintains a blog that is regularly updated with new materials and information about LPR.

I highly recommend this book.
