Never judge a book by it's cover . . .

I had this book sitting on a shelf for quite a while before I finally picked it up and read it last week. The word "Victorian" on the cover convinced me that I was not going to enjoy this book, and goodness . . . a housekeeper and an Inspector teaming up to solve a murder? It all just seemed a little too quaint. As it turns out, this is a great puzzling murder mystery. It's not just the housekeeper and inspector sleuthing for clues, but also the cook, the coachman and other "household help". A great book to read on a cold, winter's night. I now look forward to reading more in the series.

Don't read it for the history

The focus of the book was in solving the mystery, and the answer was fairly clever. The pacing was good, and the characters engaging. The world-building was okay. It often felt to me like this mystery could have happened at any time but had a few historical things dropped in to make it a historical. The social structure shown in the book certainly wasn't typical of the time. The characters are what kept me reading, not the mystery or the history.

I am a big fan of this author and this book is another hit out of the park. Hunter is the man of anyone woman's fantasy and he wants Nadine. At first Nadine thinks the only reason Hunter comes around is for the coffee but if you read any of these books you know nobody comes for the coffee but they do come for the coffee shop girls. This book is great it is about two lonely people who do not realize how much they long to have a person to call their own by their side. If you have not read any of the coffee shop books that is ok they are stand alone's or can be read in any order. This author has put out one hit after another with these books, and I would recommend her books to anyone this one included. Pick it up and you will not be disappointed.

Love the Coffee Shop Girls Series. Have not been disappointed with any of them. This is a story about not holding how a person makes a living against them. This time around Nadine who works in the Coffee shop fines romance with a man named Hunter aka Porn Star.

Little does Nadine know that the man she is dating works in the industry of Porn. As the sexual tension build between the two the reader gets a front row seat as to what happens when Hunter secret is revealed by an unlikely source.

Let's just say the fireworks between Nadine and Hunter light up more than just the sheets.

I'm not sure how I would feel if I found out I was dating a Porn star. Probably how Nadine felt.
The sexual tension was my favorite part about this story. I could feel the heat radiating off my kindle!
This was my first introduction to the coffee shop series and it couldn't have been better. (I can get more?- Woohoo!)I am now off to buy the rest of the Girl from the Coffee Shop series because I loved this one and the author's style!

Having popularized her offbeat brand of Christian inspiration with Jesus, CEO and Jesus in Blue Jeans, Jones returns with a notion that nicely coincides with secular interest in intuition and psychic phenomena. In an argument that is more earnest than persuasive, she suggests the importance of "prophecy" as an influence on behavior. Jones views prophecy as a divine message that manifests in spoken words, dreams or symbols that are transmitted through individuals, angels and even animals. Rooting her work in the Bible, popular culture and personal experience, she writes simplistically and lightens the work with remarks such as that Noah "went straight to Home Depot" for lumber upon hearing the prophecy of a flood. With the help of sample prayers and reflective questions, she encourages readers to recognize and benefit from prophecy in all its forms. Though, on the one hand, she movingly shows how children's lives have been influenced by both encouraging and discouraging comments from adults, on the other, she attributes an importance to names (e.g., the name Regina or the surname Strong) that is overblown. Interpreting prophecy in instances of defeat, desire, expectation and protest, and as self-fulfilling, a helpful chapter on overcoming negative prophecies works effectively as a pep talk on attitude. A fantastic book that opened my mind & heart.

I am a devoted fan of Laurie Beth Jones. I thought I "knew" what the term "prophecy" meant, especially since her book, The Path, has had such a positive influence on my life. But this book opened my mind to the true meaning - and the impact - of prophecy. Laurie Beth Jones has such a talent for combining wisdom, humor and personal stories in all her work, and this book is the best example of that so far! I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially to parents of young children and to teachers. That said, get this book now and be prepared to stay up all night reading - that is what I did, and then spent the next morning going over it again. This book is a great companion to The Path (by Laurie Beth Jones), but certainly would be a perfect "1st choice" if you are a newcomer to her books!

WOW! What an incredible book. If your looking to fullfill the destiny of your life, if your looking for what that destiny is, read this book. This book clearly teaches the difference between Hope and Expectation, and how live to your potential through the power of Expectation. It also shows the reader how to become a positive prophetic leader in your own personal life and in the lives of others. I highly recommend this book for all of those who truly want to find out how to create your own lifes destiny.

Not worthy of Jack Higgins

I've been a fan of Jack Higgins ever since I read "The Eagle Has Landed". The book transported me to another time and place and thoroughly engaged me. It's a great summer book. Other World War II books such as "Night of the Fox" and "Cold Harbor" were equally engaging, and I absolutely loved "Pay The Devil", so I had great hopes for this book. I'm not a fan of most of his Sean Dillon series books, but I thought that since this one dealt with issues from World War II that it might be a good read. I was mistaken.

If you've read any Higgins, you know that much of what he has produced is formua writing, but his genius is in making formula writing new and fresh and engaging every time, so much so that you'll want to pick the book up again and again even though you know where it's going and may not like the ending. While this book too is formula, it is not fresh and it's not engaging. I'm ashamed to say that I actually put the book down about 2/3 of the way through - something I very, very rarely do. I suppose that if you like some of his later books, you might find it a good read, but for me, it was not money well spent.

I enjoyed this book, and thought it was pretty well written, but I didn't LOVE this book which is why it got three starts. Would probably do 3.5 if possible. I liked the characters and the book kept a pretty good pace because it really spans the life of a Mikali and his adventures. The reader gets to see how Mikali became what he is, and I personally actually liked the character. I did not however, like the ending. I figured how it would end, and I won't ruin for anyone, but I was still disappointed. Overall it was a good book and I enjoyed it.

The discovery spawns a generation of militant entrepreneurs, later called conquistadors, who set out to make the New World theirs. Many were born poor soldiers or peasant farmers from Extramadura. They were adventurers who saw an opportunity to leave the endless wars of 16th century Europe, particularly after Hernan Cortes toppled the Aztec empire of Montezuma. They did not know exactly what they would find in the unexplored New World to the south of Mexico, Hispaniola and Panama, but they were willing to gamble their lives for what they knew they would never have if they remained on the Iberian Peninsula. Many had seen the fragmented kingdoms of modern day Italy in the Italian Wars - and a life far better there than their homeland, which was still recovering from the decades of struggle against Muslin occupiers. They had fought, but were still poor. Intuitively, the leaders, such as young Francisco Pizarro, believed the unknown lands to the south of Panama would give them the chance to be something, with 2,000 miles of distance from the rules and reach of the Crown and the Church.

For the crown of Castile, the New World presented the chance to secure gold and silver treasure that could fund a renaissance for the people – and the nobility. Queen Isabella’s treasury was nearly empty and King Ferdinand needed funding for his Kingdom of Aragon’s interminable challenges from France for his Kingdom of Naples. Thus began a two century long dependency of the Crown on the flow of vast treasures from the conquistadors

Ensconced in their isolated, insulated world, Book Two recounts the Inca nation driving to its zenith as 1500 dawned. Over the course of five generations, the leadership had adapted the best elements of earlier civilizations of the Chavin, Tiuanuoco, Huari, Wari, Chimu, Moche, Nazca and the Amayra into an administrative masterpiece of government built on an astutely conceived ideology centered on a God King, the Sapa Inca. Stretching down two thousand five hundred miles of coastline and with at least six million people during the peak of this culture, the Inca leadership had crafted a practical, holistic style of communal living, which allowed people to survive passably well in harsh, multifaceted climates. The Inca “empire” was certainly reliant on military force at various times of it’s spectacular growth, but, this theocracy was also a delicate web of feigned or genuine alliances, secured through improving the productivity of the land, diplomacy and building infrastructure which arguably surpassed the Roman Empire in its scope. The “empire” flourished for a century because there was more food, water and security than in the past.

Three dynamic and tenacious men achieved this feat. Pachecutec, Topa Inca Yupanque and Huayna Capac, supported by a host of dedicated lieutenants, deftly applied their leadership skills while navigating the intrigues of rival family groups. The arrival of the “bearded men”, the Castilians, on their shores presented a challenge never encountered before.

Historical Fiction at Its Best

I agree with both of the first two recommendations regarding the second volume in this series of two books; first “The Beginning,” then following in sequence “The Quest.” These two related books should be read in that exact sequence, as they are integral to each other. I have just completed reading both. In many history books you get a dry read of historic facts, sometimes presented in a manner that makes history interesting or exciting. Here you have someone write a book like a history with a lot of historic facts, but with a “voice” (though partly fictional), with personality given to real characters in history.
I read both reviews after having read both volumes of the books. I also admit to thinking of James Michener, as the first reviewer mentioned, though with more researched historic fact presented page-after-page-after-page. It made me think I was reading a history with some fictional elements, rather than fiction, with some history interwoven.
I too found these books hard to put down. Though I am mainly an avid reader of non-fiction books (history, exploration and archaeology), covering the New World from the Bering Strait to Tierra del Fuego, plus the Bahamas and Caribbean, I personally loved the interweaving of the European and Papal historical events preceding and contemporary with the New World exploration and conquest events. This gives context to the hows, whys and impetus of exploration, from both directions—east to west and west to east—as well as elements of the known pre-Columbian (pre-contact) history of the Incas. My only criticism of these books is that they could have been edited tighter for spellings of some historical persons and locations, but these were only minor bumps in the road, and did not significantly lessen my enjoyment of both of them.
I have an extensive library of books on the history and archaeology of Peru, and have also toured in recent years many of the ruins and locations mentioned in these books, from Chiclayo and Trujillo south to Cusco and further south to Lake Titicaca and Tiwanaku, as well as the Pacific coast between Nazca and Lima. Reading Kochis’s books was like revisiting these sites and re-reading with new emphasis many of the related New World history books I have in my library, only in detail within these two books . I felt like the author got his subject right—dead on—from all angles, including the geography of Peru and other areas of the New World mentioned, as well as the substance of the impact of these world changing events. And Kochis also enriched my view of both the conquerors and the conquered. This was not a fictional glorification of the conquistadors. It was a balanced view of both.

Finally it takes the reader through the clash of countries, cultures and conquistadors to the fall of the Inca Empire and the rise of Spanish colonial power. It is an epic work full of information and an exciting story.

Fun crochet projects, e-book

This e-book has some cute and fun crochet patterns for games. I'll be making some of the projects, as Christmas presents; and I'm sure the youngsters will enjoy the games (the adults can have some fun too). All of the patterns are simple, a beginner can do most of them; the chessboard is a little more challenging but not too complicated.

this is a well written book by a family oriented, young lady with her head screwed on right. She has taken alot of care to make sure that her patterns are easily understood and thoughtfully constructed. I have recommended this book to all of my students and young family members. What a wonderful way to be introduced to crochet!!

Fun and Creative Too - Terrific Package!

Having read a LOT of patterns and crochet books in this long enjoyed hobby, I've never before seen patterns that make me laugh. The author has the ability to write clearly and with the detail that will let us replicate these cute toys. She also has fun with side comments and word pictures . I thoroughly enjoyed my reading. In fact, I don't recall a single writing error or snag. That was a blessing!

If you purchase this book I hope you have as much fun bringing them to life as I plan to!
