We focus on emerging issues in the field of neutrophil biology, address questions in this area that remain unanswered, and critically examine the experimental basis for common assumptions found in neutrophil literature.

Post-modern thinking suggests that social workers must learn to cope with complexity in ways that are in tension with the increasingly managerialist organization of the social services. The authors explore and question the concepts of 'postmodern', 'international' and 'global' in light of growing interest in international social work in the early 21st century. Emphasizing the importance of critical reflection, they argue that educational colonization can be challenged and effective anti-discriminatory and pro-equality practice and education promoted.

Each chapter provides direct examples of how students and academics can apply these ideas in practice and in their learning, and how they can respond to and influence the challenges and changes that are taking place. The authors also examine educational and practice issues arising from attempts to incorporate international understanding into national practice and education systems. The book is designed to be stimulating to academics interested in international social work while remaining accessible to practitioners and students without international experience.

5 star serial, 4 star novel, 1 star customer relations

UPDATE: As of this writing (4/9/13), there is a plan to have a "coda" included in the hardcover version that expands the ending from chapter 13 (and in fairness this was the plan all along, but clearly not fully communicated). Perhaps Tor Books will reconsider the decision and offer this simultaneously to the Kindle and other ebook users. As of right now, it leaves me feeling like a bit of a sap for buying the book as a serial. Also, Scalzi has announced a "Season Two" for The Human Division, meaning that the unresolved nature of chapter 13 is presumably a jumping off point for that 2nd season. I don't mind this in abstract. As you can see from my review I enjoyed this book. However, I think most readers thought they were buying 13 installments of a self-contained novel, not 13 chapters of part I.

Original Review (slightly modified):
Having now finished the "The Human Division" as a serial novel, I decided to write my review not of an individual chapter but of the entire work, both in how it works as a novel and as a serial.

First a brief primer. If you are unfamiliar with Scalzi's work, I wholeheartedly recommend starting with "Old Man's War". It is a rollicking science fiction adventure in the "Humans versus all of the other aliens in the universe" variety. It has been touted as the closest thing to a modern Heinlein novel, and I actually think that's pretty close to the mark. Scalzi's writing is fun, imaginative, and accessible. Read it now, if you haven't.

But most folks getting to this review are probably quite familiar with the Scalzi oeuvre. A brief non-spoiler background of this particular novel is that the humans are divided into factions, the Colonial Union, which has colonized space and made more than a few enemies, and the indigenous population of Earth, which, now that it knows the Colonial Union has kept it held in relative backwardness and used for exploration fodder, is firmly estranged, if not quite in the "enemies" camp. This novel follows the exploits of Colonial Defense Forces technical expert Lieutenant Harry Wilson, Colonial State Department Ambassador Ode Abumwe, and minor diplomatic functionary (as well as Wilson friend) Hart Schmidt. The group is a "B-Team" of not-the-best diplomats who nonetheless have a history of successful outside-the-box successes. This lands them in a series of events that increasingly point to conflict between the military forces of the Colonial Defense Union, the political forces of Earth, the alien union known as "Conclave" and a shadowy force that may be none of the above which appears to be manipulating events.

Regarding the "serial experience". I'll just say that if this novelist thing doesn't work for John Scalzi, he's got a great future ahead of him as a drug dealer. Releasing a chapter a week, starting with The Human Division #1: The B-Team, was a highly addictive return to the "Old Man's War" universe. He managed to maintain an interesting overall narrative arc while simultaneously creating what amounted to 13 consecutive short stories. Each release, sold for only $0.99, seemed to be more self-contained than chapters in a novel would normally be. This was a great strength as the chapters were coming out, and I found myself looking forward to the weekly Tuesday release date with great anticipation. While the chapters varied in size and quality, at no point did I feel like I got less than a dollar's worth of entertainment.

Unfortunately, that strength as a serial may have limited the ultimate effectiveness as a novel. In the later chapters, there was less than the usual sense of building to a culmination. As an example, in the penultimate chapter, a character who was introduced as a bit player in the last third of the novel suddenly gets a turn in the spotlight. Again, this chapter worked as a standalone story, but it felt out of sync with the expectation that the chapter should be setting up some sort of big finish. Likewise, a reader's knowledge of the main characters has remained fairly two dimensional. With one exception (again, which worked as a short story but felt disconnected from the larger narrative) we know little more about the main characters than when we started. We know Abumwe is from Nigeria, we know Schmidt is from a political family, and we know that Wilson is from Chicago. That's about it for character arc for the three main characters, other than that they bond though the crises. Again, for a novel, the whole was somewhat less than the sum of the parts.

There is some qualified good news, depending on how you look at it. At the end of this serial, it has now, in an (I hope) unintended nod to George Lucas, been retconned into "Season One". I found it too cute by half to re-christen this as season 1 just as I was reading the last chapter. Still, it's clear that Scalzi has much more of this story left to tell. If one takes the view that there are 1 or 2 other Human Division novels, with attendant additional character development, then some of these flaws may abate. I still think the constraints of writing serially show a bit in the finished product, but I expect I'll be happy to follow the continued exploits of the no-so-B-after-all Team. I'll just read the fine print next time.

So in the end, the ride _was_ great fun. It's sad, because the experience, reading the first book in a series in a weekly serial format, is one which I would have signed up for at the beginning. Unfortunatly, it was marred by a ham-handed roll-out of future plans. I would also say that, my complaints aside, I recommend the completed novel to anyone who liked Old Man's War and is not put off by the above.

Underwhelming

This should be the celebration of 13 weeks hard reading, but instead I just feel like these episodes only scratched the surface. An iconic symbol from Old Man's War taken out in spectacular style, but there was no explanation, no resolution, everything is still hidden, and its unsatisfying.

Rip off!

I like John Scalzi's books, and I have bought all that he has published so far, including the "Human Division" serial.
But the chapter #13 is the last Scalzi book I will ever buy!
I don't like to be ripped off! I expect a novel to have an ending. Chapter 13 was no ending at all. It leaves us hanging - hoping we will find out who the bad guys are in the next $13 serial.
Wrong!
Not me, I'm done with Scalzi.

    You are what you eat

    I read a lot of fiction, mostly sci-fi and horror. And I write lot of reviews. Sometimes people write and say "I read your review of "XXX" and thought you might like to read my new book, "XXXX" and review it. It's about this and that. I would like to send you a free copy". Or something like that. Sometimes I say yes, more often, no. But first time author Walt Morton just sent me an e-copy and said he thought I might like it based on my review of 11/22/63. It was called "American Ghoul" and his description sounded interesting, so I loaded it up and started to read.

    American Ghoul is not quite like any other fiction that I've read before. It's not exactly horror, it's not exactly a coming of age story, it's not exactly a comedy, but somehow has elements of all of these. It *is* one of the most original pieces of fiction that I have read in quite a while, and is a heck of a fun read. Howard Pickman (on a scale of nerdness for names, I'd have to give that one an 8.5) is a bright, nerdy high school senior, who just happens to be a ghoul. It's an inherited, genetic condition. Ghouls don't have any super powers, or association with the undead, or anything like that. They just happen to have a biochemical anomaly that requires them to consume (rather minimal) quantities of freshly deceased people - mostly parts like brains, glands, liver, etc. They grind them up and eat it along with regular food. If they don't, over time they start to deteriorate and age, slowly, at first, and then more rapidly until they die. Usually, they do their grocery shopping in cemeteries after midnight, after searching the obits for leads to the youngest, freshest, un-embalmed corpses (I guess they must eat a lot of Jews [Jews are not embalmed]).

    Howard lives in Georgia, and comes home one night to a scene straight out of the movie "Frankenstein", with a hoard of crazed villagers holding pitchforks and shovels, surrounding his home, that is ablaze with his mother and father trapped inside. Howard manages to escape and runs away to his Granny's who lives in south western New Jersey in 1977. All of this happens in the first 20 pages or so, so I haven't given anything away yet. Nor will I. This one deserves NO spoilers.

    I was very surprised at how much I liked American Ghoul, mostly for its portrayal of of how Howard makes a new life for himself in NJ, find a group of likewise socially outcast friends and deals with all of that and his senior year in High School, plus his and Granny's unique eating requirements. It is exceedingly well written. Once I was in, I was never jarred out of the story by poor or clumsy writing, giant plot holes, lame vocabulary or poorly drawn characters. Granny is a hoot, and so is Howard's best friend Sebastian - all very three dimensional and believable. The writing, editing, dialog and pacing are so well done that it is hard to imagine that this is Morton's first novel. There is little or none of the horror or gore that I would have expected from a "ghoul" novel (of course, come to think of it, I've read tons of novels about vampires, werewolves, zombies, demons etc, but this was my first ghoul), but there is horror - of the human kind. That is often the worst.

    Morton brings everything to a exciting and satisfying conclusion, with a couple of large twists en route. All in all, very well done.

    It's hard to say exactly why it's more interesting now to read this story of a young American Ghoul than all of the Zombie Apocalypse stuff. Maybe because the main character is the Ghoul. Actually he is a teenager who happens to be a Ghoul and has to deal with it.

    So right away that means the plot is more interesting then the inevitable zombie plot: Oh my god! What's happening? Run! Get a gun! Shoot them in the head. Run! Find more people! Make a stand! Shoot a lot more of them in the head!
    Yup.

    Told from the perspective of the Ghoul/human being, the story can really delve into the heart of fear and what it means. Where it comes from and how it is digested by the object of that fear. That makes the story and the action so much more exciting. The reader is actually involved in journey of the monster and not just the killing of the monster.
    That's what made the original Frankenstein so compelling. You felt for the tortured soul and the same time you feared it.

    And "American Ghoul" is simply a great and very original story, very well told.

    Fun and Gripping with a Side of Scary

    Funny, scary, and moving. American Ghoul is a fast-paced thriller and coming of age story. Set in the 1970's amidst high school, muscle cars and punk rock is a teenager trying to find his way. The main character Howard is a likable kid trying to do his best as he battles his true nature; but he needs his true nature to survive. His best friend and band mate Sebastian is hilariously quotable as he constantly rages against the machine. Granny is blast as well as an unlikely, quirky voice of occasional reason.

    Reminiscent of Heathers, this book explores what it is like to feel like an awkward monster and looks at just who the real monsters are. It is humorous, sometimes dark, and filled with witty social commentary. A fun read for teens and their parents who will appreciate the nostalgia for the '70s.

    Something I can use everyday. I'm glad I heard about this book very well written and inspirational I'm noticing my mood and thoughts much more positive.

    After reading the remarkable daily journals and quotes, I'm on my journey to happiness now, Thank you!

    Very much looking forward to listening to all the happiest songs at the end of the book and digging into the happiness quotes.

    Plus there is a list of the best happiness movies which I have not seen many of them and looking forward to it with some buttery popcorn.

    Two for the price of one ...

    There are times when I am in the mood for a good romance - nothing complicated about it. This is one of those books! Two stories make up this one book - and though they are similar being from the heart, the stories are of different situations. "Forsaking All Others" is about female photographer that has been used by a previous male model turned lover and is now having difficulties trusting "anything that wears pants." But she has to work with them due to her profession. Are they all users or is there one out there that doesn't just love himself? "A Promise to Cherish" is about a business woman that is having a difficult time making a go of it in a male's world. She picks up the wrong suitcase in the airport putting herself in an ackward situation when she meets the owner of it. Both stories are on learning to trust others and opening up your heart even if there is a chance of it being heart. The risk is worth it. They are one night reads to enjoy! Of course, you can't help but enjoy with LaVryle Spencer being the author!

    A very entertaining read, although not personally one of my Spencer favorites. The characters of Allison and Lee will appeal to strong, independent women who have been burned by love, and yet remain optimistic about romance. While the male lead characters, in my opinion, could have been examined more in depth, the end result is a pleasant enough romance.

    This thing is so dense its nearly incomprehensible. Also it's supposed to be a Russia only version and is illegal to sell to people in the US. It's in English and is the correct text, just is a s***ty text book to begin with.

    Are You an Otherish Giver?

    I've been reading this book for a few days now - finished it yesterday - and I am already finding myself changing a bit of how I operate. According to the book, I am usually a matcher - one who gives reciprocally, when I figure I can receive in return. And there isn't much wrong with that. But, according to Adam Grant and his bevy of research, otherish givers are usually the most successful.

    So, let me explain.

    There are three broad styles of interpersonal dealing: taking, matching, and giving. Takers are those who try to take more than they give. Matchers are those who try to give and take proportaionally and conditionally. Givers are those who give more than they take. Takers are primarily self-oriented, matchers are other-oriented as a means to being self-oriented (I'll help you when I think you will help me) and givers are primarily other-oriented.

    Here's the counter-intuitive part. If we look at the most successful people - the happiest, the most likely to be promoted, etc - they are generally givers, and if we look at the least successful, they too often tend to be givers. (Takers do moderately well, but over time, few want to deal with them. Matchers do okay too.)

    This book is an attempt to explain why being a giver is a good 'strategy' for success, as well as under what conditions giving is a failing 'strategy.' First, the positive: simply put, people appreciate givers and giving often makes people want to give back. Since givers help others and often put others' needs as a priority, givers often garner (without deliberately trying - AND THAT IS KEY!) a network of support from others they've helped. Want to communicate most effectively? Ask more questions to others than you give answers, ask for advice, and be aware of how you can help others. Want to bring out the best in people around you? Believe in them by recognizing and appreciating their strengths and contributions. Want to be successful? Don't think of personal relations as zero-sum games (where others can only win to the degree you lose), but positive sum games (if you win, it doesn't mean that I lose, but we can all win together).

    It sounds obvious, right? But it isn't. Even when we may be givers in our personal lives, we often become matchers or takers at work. Even if the success of a giving strategy seems intuitive, it is equally intuitive that getting ahead requires receiving as much as or more than you get, spending most of your time working on things that will obviously benefit you, and not spending more time assisting others at work than getting your own stuff done. But Grant cites a growing body of research showing that giving - under the right conditions - really is the best overall 'strategy.'

    Of course, I said "under the right conditions." What are those conditions? Well, for starters, one must give with some sort of purpose. Those who don't see some sort of result from their giving often burn out. (So, fundraising telemarketers burn out less when they can talk with those who their efforts have helped, and teachers burn out less when they see what their more successful students go on to do.) Also, one must give to others and things that the giver is interested in. (Volunteering for projects and to help people I care about is much easier and fun than for those I care little about.) Lastly, one must watch out not to be exploited by takers, who can often seem like givers in their agreeableness, but be exploitative in the end. (And Grant gives some good advice on how to detect real givers versus takers who are good actors.)

    So, all of this is what Grant calls 'otheerish giving.' Giving selflessly versus giving a bit selfishly is, Grant writes, what ultimately separates successful from unsuccessful givers. Give, but make sure one is giving with a sense of purpose, and to people and things one cares about. Give, but not when it comes AT THE EXPENSE of one's own projects.

    And this is the one area of criticism I have for Grant's otherwise well-written and VERY interesting book. He doesn't do a great job distinguishing between matchers (those who give when they think there will be something for them in return), and otherish givers (those who give selectively). .On its face, I think I have an understanding of the difference, but the ideas are very closely related.

    One other small area of criticism: does it make sense to urge others to give, but then point out that giving is a good strategy to success? If one adopts giving as a strategy for success, then doesn't that mean, in a sense, that they are takers (giving because they expect to gain more than they give ultimately)? Grant warns against this tendency, telling us that giving because one expects ultimate benefits - is often a self-defeating strategy that others can detect. But, doesn't the mere fact that Grant's whole point is to show that and how giving is ultimately a winning strategy mean that many people WILL adopt it somewhat artificially because they expect a payoff? (I don't see how its avoidable.)

    Anyway, I did gain a lot from this book. Not only have I found myself monitoring some of my interpersonal dealings by the advice given in this book, but it's given me insights into what working styles many of my colleagues have (which affects how I deal with them). Very good book that not only conveys some very interesting research, but should be able to give people some good and usable advice.

    Oh, and as a final teaser... chapter 3 explains why Jonas Salk - typically renowned as a giver for refusing to patent his polio vaccine - is actually a taker.

    4 Star Book . . . Give Or Take A Star . . .

    I have been looking forward to this book because I have heard so many positive things about it leading up to its release. It is a very well written book, and I am looking forward to reading more from Adam Grant in the future (a business professor who is a professional magician too . . . only good things can come from that combination). As talented as Grant is, and you can tell just from reading it how much work he poured into the book, I felt that it fell short in ways that other recent books have succeeded.

    The basic premise of the book is that "Givers" are more successful in the long run, for a variety of reasons. This is especially true now in the United States because so many people, up to 80%, work in a service industry. Giving pays huge dividends, and Grant proves his theory with anecdotal evidence backed up by research studies.

    What I Liked:

    * The first chapter was very good. The argument that givers are more successful across a wide variety of fields is made succinctly, and the evidence is hard to argue with.
    * Love all the practical tools in the last chapter.
    * Stories chosen throughout the book are all new to me - no rehashing from other business books, which is a plus.

    What I Didn't Like:

    * Though the stories are different, I was not compelled by most of them. They were interesting, but the connection to the chapter material lacked in some places.
    * The first and last chapter were great, but I would rate the middle as mediocre. Every chapter felt like it was just too long, like the publisher had a quota to fill and just stretched the material as far as it would go to get up to 300 pages.
    * While I agree with the premise, I'm not sure I would be convinced if I hadn't already been on his side before reading the book. Did not read like a persuasive book.

    I wish the author would have interspersed more practical application throughout the book. A book in a similar vein, To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others, offers practical sections at the end of each chapter. Pink also argues for a new approach to business based on our service economy and, while he doesn't define them as givers, they come to many similar conclusions. Because I just read Pink's book and because of all the practical application, I will be recommending it over Give & Take should anyone ask. Would be hard to recommend reading both - as good as Grant's book is, there are others available that are more suitable for a wider audience.

    I want to live in a world where givers do well.

    First, a disclosure: I'm one of the people whose stories are featured in Adam Grant's book.

    I don't read a lot of books, but I'm glad I read "Give and Take".

    I agree with the reviewer who says the book is worth reading for the first and last chapters alone.

    The first chapter explains why people who give are more successful in business.

    The last chapter ("Actions for Impact") is a short, useful list of practical tools to apply the book's principles in life.

    The rest of the book is filled with good stories, too, but those are a bonus.

    I think overall this is an important book. If more business leaders succeed through principled giving of time, energy, connections, and knowledge, the world will be a better place.

    I want to live in a world where more people have this kind of success.
