Should be required reading
By Amazon Customer
This poem is now almost 100 years old. It seems that Kipling time-traveled to today, jotted down a few notes, and went home to write the poem. Or you could say that mankind doesn't learn much from past mistakes and not much has changed since 1919. I guess the public schools today have banished copybooks, especially since they don't want to teach cursive writing anymore. I'm certain they've banned the copybook headings, as all the proverbs and maxims used as timeless truths are now viewed as racist, sexist, homophobic, bigoted garbage spewed by religious nuts. I'm glad to have a copy of this poem. An awful lot of wisdom available here at Amazon for 99 cents.

Kipling poems describes the world as it was then and as it remains today.
By CG
Kipling's yesterday defines today's issues and direction too. Gods of the Copybook Heading defines well how today's debate will conclude.
"As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man' There are only four things certain since Social Progress began:-- That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow return to her mire,
and the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins,
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Heading with terror and slaughter return!"
A great poem and as philosophical as are all of his poems.
If one chooses to ignore poetic history or any history they could at least experience that ignorance with the joy of being entertained by Kipling's poetry.

A great poem for modern society
By Nanashi
This poem illustrates what happens when we steer away from common sense and defy the laws of nature. A great and short read, Kiepling is an artist.

And the show goes on...
By G.L.
Every Tuesday, I get up at the unholy hour of 3:30am to get my fix - a new episode of John Scalzi's "Human Division." This week's episode, "A Voice in the Wilderness," is not like the others before it. It doesn't follow up on last week's cliffhanger, it doesn't feature any aliens and it takes place on Earth.

That's about as much as I can say without wading into the spoiler territory. The story itself is short and sweet at just under 40 pages. As always, it features snarky dialogue (though not quite over-the-top, unrealistically snarky as in "Redshirts"), a little historical trivia, a twist at the end and a couple of SAT-level words you'd probably have to look up but which will give you the sense of linguistic superiority for the rest of the day.

This story features a rant on politics, and it's pretty interesting to see Scalzi speak through a fictional character. As a long-time reader of his blog, I can't help but wonder whether he was channeling the crazy, borderline-rabid commenters from his blog or merely allowing himself an opportunity to write at will about something he may feel strongly about. I guess we won't know the details until - or unless - he chooses to reveal them, but what we do know is that there are only 163 hours left until the next episode. Not that I'm counting or anything. ;)

Enjoyable
By Larry Donahue
I'm finding this series quite enjoyable. The first in the series started out strong, provided good character development, and provided a good foundation for the remainder of the series, which I must admit I cannot wait to obtain from one week to the next.

I've read some of the other reviews, and it seems a number of the reviews are critical of the length of these individual stories within the series, or they have trouble with the context -- jumping from one story to the next, with what appears to be very little to no connection between the stories. Others say you must have a strong memory (or have just read) of The Old Man's War.

I disagree with all those other reviews, and frankly, I really enjoy how the stories are told from such different contexts. It's clear there is an overall story-arc that is hinted at from one story to the next, like a refreshing puzzle that will reveal itself in due course. Each of the stories within the series is compelling, yet it seems clear to me is key in the overall story-arc -- which has yet to be revealed.

This smart writing, in a compelling universe. I give kudos to Mr. Scalzi in his series, and I hope other authors take note.

Save yourself
By The Bionic Man
This is fluff, filler, a thinly-veiled slam at Talk Radio and it contributes very little to the storyline. Skipping this book will not impact the series as a whole but buying it will make you wish you had your .99 back and all the time you wasted reading it. We already know that the Earth is anti-CDF because it is brought up expositorily in EVERY other "book" in the series.

Come on! I've already signed on to buy this tale piecemeal, Haven't you wrung enough juice out of me? Do you have to give it another squeeze?

Any idiot that gives this "book" 5 stars is not basing that on the content. They're doing it out of some loyalty to the author. Well, that loyalty is why I gave this book 1 star at all.

Our hearts are restless till they rest in God (St Augustine)
By trini
Review of Real Scientists Real Faith, ed. Berry. Revised 21st July 2009

The point of the author of each of the 17 tightly-packed autobiographies (about 15 pages each) in this book is first of all a simple and explicit declaration that in his or her life there is no clash whatever between the author's religious faith (Christianity, in every case here) and career in science (high-level research and professorships, in medicine, genetics, psychiatry, environmental studies, geology, nanotechnology, biochemistry, ... (There is only one woman contributor, Joan Centrella, an astrophysicist at NASA's Goddard Space Centre, where she is head of the Gravitational Astrophysics Laboratory; so hereafter, for simplicity, I shall use only `he' and `his' - my apologies to Joan)

Secondly, each author describes either how he maintained his childhood and adolescent Christian faith in the (usually) overtly or covertly hostile atmosphere of university and professional scientific life, or else, as is quite often the case, came fresh to adult Christian faith during his studies or career in science, after a lapse from early Christianity or else from a totally agnostic or atheistic background.

There is no single route, in the detail, from unbelief to belief. It is nonetheless true that in every case the `convert' came eventually to see that faith in a Creator God (and in a suffering and resurrected divine Redeemer), and knowing and living the Revealed Word of God, is wholly compatible with the other revealed word of God which mankind comes to know through the scientific investigation of the material world around us. Not only is there no clash, but `natural' science and religious belief complement, complete each other.

The true human being, the true scholar, takes account of all reality - and all reality is not exhausted by what can be seen through the microscope or in the fossil record. These scientific resources simply do not even begin to explain the splendour of mankind, which is indeed the pinnacle of God's creation. There is a void in every human heart that only God can fill, though not everyone, it must be admitted, realises how the human being is short-changed when his aspirations are limited to the Darwinist idea that man is just another ape. This contact with the divine is more than a mere realization that Darwinism does not explain everything; but for many of the scientists who write in this book the start of the ascent to the divine is precisely that realization: there is more to mankind than genes that have evolved from mere matter (and, as many see also, where, anyhow, does that `mere matter' come from? It too calls for a Creator).

The English Catholic poet Francis Thompson (1859-1907) poeticized the understanding of this human need for `more' than matter can offer, for a reality that transcends the microscope and the fossil, in his poem `In No Strange Land:
O world invisible, we view thee,
O world intangible, we touch thee,
O world unknowable, we know thee,
Inapprehensible, we clutch thee!

In his much longer poem `The Hound of Heaven' (1887), Thompson represents God as the Hound pursuing the weak human being, who tries to escape from the divine pursuit:

"Ah, fondest, blindest, weakest,
I am He Whom thou seekest!
Thou dravest love from thee, who dravest Me."

This magnificent poem (please read it in full - available on google) is a worthy reformulation of the immortal words of the fifth-century St Augustine: "Thou hast made us for Thyself, O God, and our hearts are restless till they rest in Thee."

A noteworthy feature of these biographies is that at least five of them testify that the writings of CS Lewis were instrumental in drawing them to Christianity, once they felt the need to look beyond the microscope, because the microscope did not and could not explain man's unique characteristics, and did not and could not provide a purpose in life - and these thinkers could not accept that there was no purpose to life.

I pick out two contributions. The first, because of the prestige of its author, is that of Francis Collins, for fifteen years head of the Human Genome Research Institute, who saw its work through to the publication of the full human genome. Collins has published a full-length book on his spiritual odyssey, called The Language of God (2006). In his short testimony here, he credits as a powerful argument, in his search `beyond the microscope', CS Lewis's argument that the existence of the moral law must have an explanation outside of `matter'. Like many of the other writers, too, he is unabashed in his stress on `meeting Jesus' and living his life in the presence and with the guidance of Jesus.

My second personal choice is the testimony of John Wyatt, Professor of Neonatal Paediatrics and Consultant Neonatologist at University College London Hospital. I am deeply impressed by his argument that the human embryo is `human' from the very first instant of conception, and therefore not dispensable or destroyable as `surplus' in scientific research before some mysterious moment when the embryonic `matter' becomes `human': for Wyatt, the human being is not a `soul' infused at some time into a pre-existing `mere matter' body, but is absolutely defined in its essence as `at one and the same time, [a] fully physical and fully spiritual [being]" (page 202). (Do I hear echoes from my distant philosophical past of the human soul being indeed Aristotle's `form' informing `matter'?) This essay also includes powerful witness to the role of science, and powerful testimony that science cannot explain man. It is pure gold.

The selection of testimonies represents a range of detail in belief, with one or two adopting convinced Christian positions with regard to Christ, but other positions, in the field of morality, that are controversial.

My physicist friend really appreciated the chapter which described what it is like to be a scientist.
By W. Roundy
Each of the authors describes a little of how his science and his faith work together in his experience. A Christian may not agree with each idea of each of the scientists, but each account provides some things to think about.

"Delight in Creation: Scientists Share Their Work with the Church" might be of interest to some who are interested in "Real Scientists..."

I enjoyed and appreciated this book.

Happy Apocalyptic Holidays!
By Hamilcar Barca
Seven short stories from the fantastic writing talent called The Eclective, and just in time (as of this review) for the Mayan Apocalypse. There are androids and asteroids; exes and goddesses; big waves and big bangs; and last but not least - rednecks and butt plugs.

Two of the seven tales aren't technically apocalypse-themed, but that's just fine. The thematic variety is nice and so are the stories' tones - some are spine-chilling, some are heartwarming, one's a cliffhanger, and one's hilarious. Yeah, guess where the butt plug fits in. Each author also gives a kewl closing comment about the Apocalypse.

Different readers will find different favorites in The Apocalypse Collection. Mine happened to be stories 02, 03, 04, and 06. But the other three are worthwhile too.

All seven will entertain you. Each is a compelling tale with an end-of-world or paranormal setting. Which, when you think about it, is amazing for a short story - you have to build a world, introduce a disaster, develop one or more characters, and garnish with a memorable lesson or message. All within a dozen pages or so. Wowza.

4 Stars.

Enjoyable collection
By Crazie Betty
Aliens, zombies, goddesses, this book had it all when it comes to apocalyptic scenarios. I actually thoroughly enjoyed all of these stories and would've given this 5 stars except for Alien Butt Plugs by PJ Jones. I didn't really care for that story, I didn't think it was that entertaining. There are 7 stories in this anthology and really I enjoyed 6/7 of them. Some more than others but hence the 4 star rating. Light by Emma Jameson and Cleavers by Heather Marie Adkins were really my favorites from an action and adventure sort of way. I also really loved The Last Christmas by Alan Nayes as I think it speaks to a different component of the end of the world scenarios that aren't explored as much. I definitely found some new authors from this collection that I intend on looking for more from.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys some good sci-fi/dystopia/apocalyptic literature. There will be at least one story in this collaboration that will make it worth it for you.

Great collection, Fabulous mix of genres!
By Quirky Gurl
This is a fabulous sampler of some of the most creative, talented indie authors on the market right now. Each story was inventive and wholly captivating. And I loved the way multiple genres were represented in the collection-- having a little bit of something for everybody.

On a side note, the way each author approached the theme with such different techniques really jump-started my own creativity, so I'd highly recommend reading short stories in this format in order to get your own creative juices flowing :-)

The House of Stairs
By S. Broadbent
I re-read this book recently and was glad I did. It is really one of my favorites by Barbara Vine, along with some of the other early ones like "The Tree of Hands" and "The Killing Doll'. The suspense is built up ever so slowly and Vines' prose is at her most extravagant and seductive. The plot has shades of James' "The Wings of the Dove" which is very cleverly inserted at different points in the telling of the story. The characters include a bisexual writer who forms an attachment to an odd, mysterious woman, whom we find out in the in the beginning of the novel, has killed someone, but who was it and why? The writer's eccentric aunt, and other various characters are also devilish fun. Read it and enjoy.

WHAT ON EARTH HAPPENED?...
By lawyeraau
This is a wonderful novel of psychological suspense written by Ruth Rendell under the pseudonym of Barbara Vine. From the beginning, the reader knows who the murderer is, but the identity of the victim remains in the dark. That murderer is a woman by the name of Christabel Sanger, newly released from prison after fourteen years. Spotted by Elizabeth "Lizzie" Vetch on the streets of London, Lizzie hooks up with Christabel Sanger once again, despite what Christabel once did that got her sent away for so many years. Just who did she kill?

Slowly, the facts begin coming to light. The murder took place in an old, odd house on Notting Hill known as the House of Stairs. There Christabel had been living with Lizzie, as well as with Cossette, Lizzie's recently widowed wealthy cousin and owner of the house. Also living in the house was any number of other quirky characters who would move in and out of the house with relative ease, as Cosette was generous and good-hearted. Little did Cossette know that there could exist such evil within the home she so generously opened to all and sundry.

What slowly unfolds is a tale of monstrous betrayal and cruelty that would cause all those living in the house to disperse and go their own way. John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood, by Michael D. Sellers

It took 100 years to bring Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars to the big screen. It took Disney Studios just ten days to declare the film a flop and lock it away in the Disney vaults. How did this project, despite its quarter-billion dollar budget, the brilliance of director Andrew Stanton, and the creative talents of legendary Pixar Studios, become a calamity of historic proportions?

Michael Sellers, a filmmaker and Hollywood insider himself, saw the disaster approaching and fought to save the project – but without success. In John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood, Sellers details every blunder and betrayal that led to the doom of the motion picture – and that left countless Hollywood careers in the wreckage.

JOHN CARTER AND THE GODS OF HOLLYWOOD examines every aspect of Andrew Stanton's adaptation and Disney's marketing campaign and seeks to answer the question: What went wrong? it includes a history of Hollywood's 100 year effort to bring the film to the screen, and examines the global fan movement spawned by the film.

Review
"A fair, factual, and enlightening assessment of what went wrong . . . the best corporate history I've read since Disney War." Daniel Butcher, Between Disney.-

"A winning book . . . . I have no reservations in recommending John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood. Even if you only remotely hold an interest in the film or the moviemaking method, do yourself a favor and purchase this book. I cannot remember an instance when I read 350 pages of anything in 24 hours, but my level of captivation in how methodically and interestingly the content was presented should substantiate why John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood is a must-read. Grade A." Brett Nachman, Geeks of Doom.

"A must read for every fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs and John Carter and every film buff intrigued by the 'inside baseball' aspects of modern Hollywood." Richard A. From the Inside Flap
BOOK SAMPLE PROLOGUE -- "Something Was Seriously Amiss"On November 30, 2011, the day that Walt Disney Studios was set to debut the trailer for the Andrew Stanton film John Carter on Good Morning America, I was eagerly waiting. It would be the best glimpse yet of a film that I'd been anticipating since my childhood.

I had discovered the Martian tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs at the library at Patch Barracks in Stuttgart Germany during a rainy Little League summer when I was 12, and by the time I reached adulthood I had read all the Burroughs books multiple times, and been inspired by them.  I could sketch from memory an accurate map of Barsoom, recite the full history of the Tharks and John Carter's relationship with them, and draw accurate renderings of all the creatures and cultures of that mystical planet.

Now, decades later, the movie that had existed only in my mind all these years was finally about to become a reality on cinema screens worldwide.  The release date was March 9, 2012, exactly 100 days from the November unveiling, and I was looking forward to watching the climax of the campaign unfold over the coming twelve weeks.

Finally the trailer played, and the campaign was launched.

But ... what had been hyped in advance as debut of the full theatrical trailer didn't turn out to be that at all.  Rather, it was a 45 second TV spot, with the first 11 seconds consisting of having the camera zoom in slowly on the Times Square giant screen, only cutting to the actual spot ten seconds into it.

The spot itself seemed disjointed and unfocused.   The full trailer finally did premiere sixteen hours later on Jimmy Kimmel and thankfully it was better than the cut-down version shown that morning, but it still seemed to miss the mark. Who was John Carter? Why was he leaping hundreds of feet into the air and battling apes in an arena?  And where was all this taking place?  Of course I knew the answers to all these questions, but I had read the books.  What would I think if I just came across this trailer without knowing any of the history?

I wonder what people are saying about it?

I checked online and saw that the trailer, and Disney marketing, were taking a shellacking. The Film Stage wrote:

After Disney botched the trailer release of the one film that needs all the good buzz it can get, by releasing just 49 [sic] seconds of it early this morning on GMA, we now have the full thing thanks to IGN.... I held some hope after the disappointing first trailer, and the latest one is definitely an improvement, but still not what I hoped for coming from such a great storyteller (also visually speaking) as Stanton....

Collider.com, a top entertainment outlet, offered the following:

Good Morning America had a sneak peek of the new John Carter trailer earlier today, which probably wasn't the best way to present a hard sell to an unfamiliar audience, not to mention a critical group of fans ready to tear into the film adaptation that dropped the most interesting half of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars . . .

Troubled, I decided to do a little more checking.  Until this point I had only been paying intermittent casual attention to the campaign -- what had I missed?  Was I witnessing a one-time stumble, or an ongoing problem?

On IMDB Pro,  I checked John Carter's "MovieMeter" ranking.  It was ranked 986 as of November 27, the most recent ranking, meaning 985 movies were receiving more hits and IMDB message board activity than John Carter.  This seemed low for a $250M tentpole film 100 days out from its release date. It should be higher, I thought. A lot higher.

I decided to compare John Carter to two comparable upcoming "tentpole" films -- Lionsgate'sThe Hunger Games, slated for release two weeks after John Carter on March 23, and Disney'sThe Avengers slated for release two months after John Carter on May 4. John Carter didn't need to be ranked higher or even as high as either of these two -- but it should be in the same general vicinity and seeing how these films rank would give an "order of magnitude" indication of where the other high profile films slated for a spring release were ranked.
The results? The Hunger Games was ranked 17,
while The Avengers was ranked 26.

I pulled up the IMDB Pro Data Table View for each film, which includes a week by week summary of ranking and links to each article on the film that appeared in entertainment media outlets for the week.  These articles don't just happen - they are seeded by the publicity team who release to the media stills, concept art, interviews, etc, all according to a predetermined plan and schedule.

I picked a random week, October 9, and compared John Carter, The Hunger Games, and The Avengers side by side.   The Hunger Games publicity team had generated 72 articles placed for the week; The Avengers had  placed 149 articles; the John Carter team had generated a total of 9 article placements.

Nine?

I then looked at the entire month of October and compared the article output as monitored by IMDB Pro. The score for October?

Avengers 640, Hunger Games 224, John Carter 31.

Taking the entire period from the end of August until the end of November, the disparity remained the same -- both Avengers and Hunger Games were well over 1,000 articles, and John Carter?

A whopping 45 articles.

Or, stated differently: IMDB was monitoring a little over four articles per week about John Carter, versus well over 100 per week for the other two.
What did it mean?
Unless there was something I was missing -- it seemed clear that the John Carter promotional campaign was being severely and inexplicably out-hustled and outworked by each of the other two films.   If there were a ten point scale for ranking effort expended to promote, The Avengers would rate a 9.4, The Hunger Games would rate an 8.9 for its promotional effort, and John Carter would be lucky to rate a 3.0.

Complacency? Impossible.

Because of its $250M price tag, the "bar" that John Carter had to get over was higher than the bar for either The Avengers, which had a reported cost of $220M, or The Hunger Games, with a budget of $80M.   Plus John Carter was closer to its release date than either of the other two -- meaning it was deeper into its promotional campaign and should be operating with a greater sense of urgency than either of the other two, not lesser.

I tried to imagine any scenario under which it would make sense for John Carter, during a critical period just months before its release, to go silent like this.  Could there be some artful "lie low" rationale that would explain John Carter being silent while other "tentpole" releases were grinding out the "buzz fodder"?

I couldn't think of any.

It made no sense.

No sense at all.

Clearly something was seriously amiss.

A story worthy of Edgar Rice Burroughs himself
By R. Barry
Michael Sellers has taken a story worthy of Edgar Rice Burroughs himself and told it with style, skill, fairness, thoroughness - and great affection for the original material. He narrates the gripping saga of the 100-year-old novel's long march to the big screen, during which time much of Burroughs' creative genius was 'strip-mined' by such later icons as Lucas and Cameron. Along the way Sellers treats the reader to an insider's view of today's 'gods of Hollywood,' who are not the autocratic and capricious moguls of a bygone era but equally aggressive, corporate warriors navigating the narrow straits between ever-adjusting, long-term, strategic visions and those pesky, quarterly earnings reports. In this world, cinematic artistry becomes a consumer product; and even a $250-million tentpole film can be sacrificed on the altar of an executive coup or the next acquisition.

In true Burroughs style, this timely tale ends with its own, real-life cliffhanger: will the concluding installments of the Burroughs/Stanton trilogy ever see the light of day, or, more to the point, the warm, inviting light of an IMAX theater? Against all odds, Sellers shows how that just might happen.

A must-read
By Pascalahad
Until John Carter I was hardly aware of the impact marketing had on the overall box office career of a movie. I thought, naively, that the final product spoke for itself, and that movies found their audiences no matter what. It turned out I was far from the truth. It's not that John Carter is a perfect movie. If you ask me, I think The Avengers is a more perfect movie. But John Carter is more than a perfect movie in a way, because it's a touching one. It grew on me since I first saw it in the theater, in a way no other movie ever did. It turns out I was not alone in that state of mind, the movie drew spontaneously a fan base like few others in history (and among those fans, professionals that worked on John Carter!). And it still grows today.

The book written by Michael D. Sellers is also touching in a unique way. It is both a love letter to Edgar Rice Burroughs' novel (which I dearly love also), and a journalistic approach to the way Disney handled its own movie, objective when it needs to be (and not afraid of sentences like "we don't know what happened exactly"), also subjective when it needs to. From his unique perspective as both a fan and a filmmaker in his own right, he has somewhat the best position to develop a well-informed point of view, with no stone unturned as far as I can tell.

But my favorite chapter is perhaps the smallest one: "What Would Walt Disney Think?". Indeed. When a company fails to live on its creative roots and only grows by acquisition of outside properties, while neglecting, by intent or most probably incompetence, its own, you wonder how the original spirit of its creator was perverted along the way. My sincere hope is that someone at the higher levels at Disney takes notice, and sees the reasoning behind the development of sequels.

This book is a passionate must-read, for fans but also for anyone interested in modern movie marketing techniques.

Been waiting for this book to come out!
By Jan Austin
Finally we are able to read and know what happened with the marketing (or lack there of) of the Disney film, John Carter (of Mars). As someone who is a huge fan of John Carter and thought it a brilliant, well cast and directed film,I am so disappointed regarding the lack of marketing and attention this film was initially given and the politics that played a part in why this happened. Now we are able to read about why this film was doomed from the start. As someone who interacts with thousands of John Carter fans, it is amazing and wonderful to hear how much people love this film who never saw it in the theater, but have discovered it now on DVD. Of course there is always the disappointment from them that they wished they had not listened to Disney and critics alike, and had seen the film on the big screen. It was a pleasure to be able to read this and understand just what happened and why so many people ended up unaware of not only what this film was about, but why that happened. Thankfully, I didn't listen to critics or Disney. I did get to see it on the big screen! And I wasn't disappointed a bit. I fell in-love with a wonderful movie and would love to see and support a sequel. Thank you Michael D. Sellers for The Gods Of Hollywood. I highly recommend this book and definitely give it the 5-star rating it deserves.

The book lays out in detail how youth and teen athletes and their coaches or parents can take them to successively higher levels, year after year, after year, following the proven success of Mick's training program. What differentiates this program and this book from other programs and books is that it is a unique blend of building endurance and improving basic speed throughout the year, so that the athlete is much better next year than they are this year. The program uses a FUN FIRST approach, making sure the athlete is enjoying what they are doing, and staying healthy to allow consistent training. It is the first such book to cover every topic imaginable for the youth and teen middle/distance runner, jammed packed with over 225 pages of vital information. This book is a must read for all youth runners age 6 to 18, and anyone helping youth runners starting on the way to a life long enjoyment of running, and a successful running career, including youth runners, parents of youth runners, youth runner club coaches, and high school coaches. "Mick came to me at a critical point in my athletic career. I needed to elevate the level I was competing at and needed to elevate the level I was training at accordingly. He taught me how to be the best, and what it took to win big races. He made it possible for me to receive a world-class education and work in one of the most exciting and interesting industries I can imagine, professional track & field. There are not many coaches with Mick's knowledge of the sport and commitment to the athlete, and virtually none at the youth level. He has given so much to me, and to countless others during his illustrious career. I will be forever grateful.""While reading on a subject that I consider "my own", my opinions danced in several directions, but at the conclusion, my impression was that this book is not only comprehensive, but serves as an invaluable resource for coaches, runners, and parents of runners; and one that I'll use to make some modifications to future training regimens that I prescribe. Information on youth running is nearly non-existent, and sorely lacking; and the sport itself is questionable in many parents' minds, unlike swimming and other comparable endurance sports. The "truth" lies within this publication, in how important it is for high school and college aged runners to begin as early in life as they do so many traditional sports. Development as a runner goes far beyond what talent can bring, and the process is lengthy in order to be healthy and lasting. I highly recommend this book as a mandatory starting point."

"Mick Grant is a fantastic coach who knows how to develop youth runners
into athletes who excel at the high school level and beyond. His
athletes continue to improve each year in a sport where most athletes
plateau during their middle school and high school careers. I have
two daughters and if they end up running I hope they have a coach as
caring and capable as Mick Grant."

"Mick Grant is a fantastic coach who knows how to develop youth runners into athletes who excel at the high school level and beyond.  I have two daughters and if they end up running I hope they have a coach as caring and capable as Mick Grant."
Dave Dyer, Eagle Tribune
"If you're looking for coaching bargains, look no further than Mick Grant. What Grant basically does is take aspiring young runners, keeps them motivated and injury-free and attempts to maximize their potential.

About the Author
Mick Grant has been coaching youth athletes for over 30 years with astonishing success. Parents of many ordinary local kids have requested him to coach their children to become better runners. Mick rarely recruited athletes; they came to him and most had minimal or no background in the sport before starting with him. The results he has gotten are nothing short of remarkable including National Champions six consecutive years and having qualified athletes for the Olympic Trials, Hershey National Championships 12 years in a row. Several of his runners have gone on to become State and National high school champions including Russell Brown, who went on to run a 3:51 mile and Chantelle Dron, who ran a 4:22 1500 meter run at age 15. John Molvar is a coach and private investor. As coach he has been involved in running and has studied the sport for 40 years. He has coached at the Youth, High School, College Division I, II & III and post collegiate levels. As a head college coach was named by his fellow conference coaches the Men's Conference Coach Of The Year 4 times and also Women's Coach of The Year. One of the Best Books On Training I've Ever Read
By Francis Cusick
"The Youth and Teen Running Encyclopedia" by Mick Grant and John Molvar is one of the best books on training that I've come across. It stands above other training manuals that I've read(Lore of Running, Daniels Running formula, etc.) and I think it is especially well-suited for those who are just starting out their coaching careers.

The authors do a superb job discussing the concepts behind their training philosophy and then backing it up with concrete examples. For instance, the last part of the book provides a detailed description of Coach Molvar's sons, who began running at a young age following the principles of the book and saw significant improvement.

This book makes a case for long-term aerobic development over the more short term approach favored by most high school coaches. It argues that kids should be doing less racing and hard intervals and more long runs and tempo runs. This philosophy is often talked about at clinics and such, but I've never seen it articulated in quite this manner.

Additionally, most of the speakers and authors that I have heard/read are coming from the upper-echelons of track and field. These authors are aware of the difficulties of coaching high school kids who sometimes have upwards of 40 races on their schedules. As a high school coach, I really appreciated the sections on dealing with a heavy racing schedule while continuing to focus on the long term development of the athlete.

"The Youth and Teen Running Encyclopedia" is also a very thorough read. It provides training plans, sample workouts, weight lifting and core instructions, and advice on how to deal with injuries.

Overall, this is a phenomenal book. I have no doubt that I will be referencing it for years to come. I'd highly recommend this to any coach or even young runner who is interested in learning about running.

The FIRST guide for youth and teen runners
By runningwithkids
Mick Grant and John Molvar have written a guide to youth and teen running that is based on sound approach, principles and practical applications. As a former Division 1 college cross country and track & field athlete, and having coached my two sons for the past 10 years, I have not found a youth and teen running guide that is so complete and in depth, expert yet approachable, and illustrated with tons of credible and motivational examples of athletes coached by Grant and Molvar. I would highly recommend this as the FIRST guide for youth and teen athletes, coaches and parents. I am having my two sons read is as well.

Everything in "The Youth and Teen Running Encyclopedia: A Complete Guide for Middle and Long Distance Runners Ages 6 to 18" has been field tested and with impressive results. Grant and Molvar believe in a goal-oriented, developmental approach to running that focuses on fun, progressive and consistent training that builds success and rewards over the long-term. The authors present a comprehensive framework and expand on the components of that framework with rich, detailed and logical sections that include both principles and practical applications, and illustrate them with real sample workouts used by Grant's and Molvar's coached athletes. And there are lots of "don'ts" with explanation of consequences if runners and coaches fail to follow what is recommended.

The guide covers topics that I think are important for youth and teen runners, but that other guides omit, including focus on setting goals and achieving improvement, importance of endurance training and "putting money in the bank", importance of injury prevention, too much racing and mental burnout, heart rate to measure training intensity, differences between male and female teen runners, strength training, sleep and nutrition, and use of training logs.

The icing on the cake is the wrap-up that emphasizes the key points of the guide and includes a progressive outline of John Molvar's training of his two sons and their achievements, including changes Molvar made from year to year and the resulting impact (and tying Molvar's training to specific sections of the guide - just in case the reader has any doubts that it works).

For me, the guide reinforced many of the things that I am already doing as a coach for my two sons, introduced new training that I have adopted since learning from Grant and Molvar, and (I'm not afraid to say it) changed some things that may not have the intended benefit.

At last an encyclopdia worth reading every page.
By bu754
Wow!! I just finished reading this book. I hope the authors have a game plan on how to market and get this all important book into as many hands as possible. A "must read" is far over used, but in this case, this book is a must read for all parents, coaches and kids. The book is not only an encyclopedia, but rather a well-constructed blueprint for success. Read once through and keep forever as a complete reference guide. Following the principles outlined in this book will result in a rewarding running experience and steady improvement each and every year. Coaches, please for the sake of your program, digest every page of this book!! You will rediscover the importance of long term development rather than short term results. Making the appropriate changes will propel your program to next level. Every aspect of training and racing with specific dos, and more importantly the don'ts are covered in great detail.
