super fantasy

Eddie "Shaman Bond" Drood, his lover Molly Metcalf the witch and his family defend humanity against evil paranormal monsters. Eddie and Molly learn of a horrific Satanist plot from beyond when his spirit was a prisoner in Limbo and she came to take him home to Drood Hall. Needing help, Eddie enlists his Uncles the Armourer and the Librarian and Molly's sister Isabella.
The team finds further evidence of the Great Sacrifice project that has been deployed in Little Stoke. A confused Eddie and Molly obtain assistance from Ammonia vom Acht the telepath to enable the Librarian to fully function. As they dig deeper, neither Eddie, Molly or the rest of team anticipated the betrayal that leaves their side tottering towards hell since the armor fails while earth is being turned into a supernatural battlefield with a paranormal weapons commodity market thriving in the Himalayas.
The latest Secret Histories urban (and mountain) fantasy (see From Hell with Love) is a superb thriller that has the Drood brood trying to save the world. The story line is fast-paced and satirically over the top of the Himalayas as Eddie's zoo crew is certifiable, but then again who would not be if they were fighting supernatural monsters. With a lampooning nod to James Bond in an urban fantasy earth, fans will relish For Heavens Eyes Only and await the direct sequel Live and Let Drood.

My eyes wish they'd never seen it…..
By Janine M. Steiner
I was, originally, thrilled at the notion that SRG was going to take on the James Bond legend/legacy and "Simonise" it. How could I not be? Bond is one of the most infamous characters of his time and SRG has EXACTLY the right amount of irreverence and respect necessary to take on almost any character in history and turn him/her inside out and on his/her ear! Let's face it, He's John Cleese meets Mr Steed (dare I throw in just a dash of the heavenly Mrs Peel?) for any reader old enough to know and appreciate those names for who they are and what they mean to a whole generation. So when FHEO started in "Limbo" with Mr "aren't you dead?" Walker I was originally pleased at the notion. Walker had always been somewhat of an enigma albeit a very powerful one, so seeing him on someone else's turf was a pleasant surprise. Until it wasn't pleasant.... it was (and Dear God I hate to use this word in conjunction with ANYTHING SRG does) almost cliche'. One of SRG's greatest strengths has always been his ability to take something so out of the ordinary as to make it seem impossible and then include it in the story as though it were as common as a slice of bread. Seriously; think about the little trolls from Blue Moon Rising, or the unicorn Breeze hiding behind a tree... SRG doesn't just run with Granny Gangs... he's one of the leaders! Which is why this is so painful for me. Because there is nothing inherently wrong with FHEO. It's just that it's inherently too familiar. No there's no people-eating houses, no bored, annoyed dragons looking for someone...ANYONE to take an annoying Princess off his hands. No murderous scarecrows terrifying the crap out of anyone who's even in their vicinity (although he does resurrect the Scarecrow Jack legend and "use" it at one point). Hell, it's not even 3:00 am in a part of town you'd have to be crazy to want to go to but you still do anyway. You know what this book feels like to me... it's a Ford Taurus. Meant to be new, different and just exciting enough to want; while also maintaining perfect serviceability. There's nothing really wrong with it. It's a good value for the cost. It's got a reliable name behind it... but you aren't going to see any Angel Wars through it's windows. The Old Sea Goat won't be found getting drunk in the backseat and it won't end up on any roads where the cabs have no drivers and the occasional person on foot can get eaten by one of those cabs. Because while he may be rehashing old plots he isn't adding enough spicy variety to keep this series interesting enough.
FHEO feels kind of "been there, done that" to me. And I REALLY, REALLY don't want it to. The bad guys are not the stuff that nightmares are made of (think about those red "creatures" all teeth and claws and killing machines from Deathstalker). Or the "would you or wouldn't you" tension surrounding the idea of entering (and being changed by) The Madness Maze. Or what about a whole planet full of plants that make the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park look like... well, look like a Theme Park damnit! The Drood universe(s) should have the potential to surpass what has gone before it if not at least alter it completely. Instead it just seems to tap into SRG's marvelous worlds and ideas and recirculate them like the air in the cabin of a plane at 35,000 feet. I'm breathing the air, it's going to keep me alive, I've got a window seat and mostly enough room to be comfortable for my 3-4 hour flight (no transfers to screw everything up). But it's obviously NOT first class and much of what I'm seeing out the window is an all-too-familiar landscape to me. I miss my Simon. I miss the breathless anticipation of turning the page. I miss disappearing into his worlds so completely that my own world ceased to exist for as long as the book lasted. FHEO left me skipping sections and sometimes entire pages just to get it over with.
FHEO, when you get right down to it, is basically a rehash of every other great thing he's written all mixed up together like a big bowl of soup. A kind of icky soup; and it's hard to swallow this storyline when everything else he's done has been so fresh, fun and original. I sometimes ask myself if the Nightside series wasn't the wellspring for a lot of other authors who took up "urban fantasy" because he showed how much fun it could be and how easy he made it to suspend all your disbelief whether you were reading them at 3 in the afternoon or "3am"…. cause it's always 3am in The Nightside. In my opinion, The Drood series is basically The Nightside for spies only this series just doesn't hold up under scrutiny. Sorry Simon… been there, done that. You're better than this and you've proven that in everything else you've ever written.
I've gone as far as I can with the Droods and that, like the series itself, just feels sad.

Return of the Drood's
By Andy Shuping
(If you haven't read the last book this review does have one minor spoiler)
Simon Green once again returns us to the Drood universe, the shamans of humanity. In the last book the Drood's took on the immortals and suffered many losses along the way, including Eddie's at the end. But even death can't keep Eddie from trying to save the world. This time a Satanic Conspiracy threatens all of humanities souls and only the Drood family can put a stop to it. Along the way the Librarian is healed, a mysterious presence is revealed, and old friends come back from the seeming dead.
This book has everything that we've come to expect from Simon R. Green's Drood Universe, fast paced action, some tired cliches from spy films/books, and twists and turns that we didn't see coming. This was an excellent read and I would say it's probably the second best book of the series (the best book being the first one.) Green does have a tendency to take up a few too many pages with action and repeated phrases and it does have some plot holes if you've read the rest of the series, but overall its an excellent read and I can't wait for the next book.
