DW: Do readers really compare Pia and Jacob to other literary heroes and heroines?
SJ: I’ve heard Pia Sabel compared to Jack Reacher many times because she’s a straight-forward, no-nonsense heroine who beats the crap out of people. Recently, I’ve heard Jacob Stearne in the same breath as Stephanie Plum because of his whacky lifestyle and romantic problems. It’s appropriate because he’s our comic-relief character.
DW: What is your favorite book of all time? How has it influenced you and your writing?
I don’t have just one. One Shot by Lee Child, because it has such an intricate set of clues, ranks right up there with First Drop by Zoe Sharp, because she nailed the teenagers with incredible insight and humor.
DW: Did you always want to be a writer or did you fall into the profession?
I was nineteen and single when I adopted a three-year-old girl and raised her (More about that on my site, http://seeleyjames.com/about/ ). Kids need a lot of money and attention, so I worked in the upwardly mobile tech industry. Later in life, my career afforded me the ability to take a huge risk.
DW: Which authors have had a profound impact on your writing?
SJ: Gillian Flynn because she thinks way outside the Agatha Christie formula. Janet Evanovich because her books are just plain fun. J. D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts) has some phenomenal writing techniques. Daniel Silva, Harlan Coben, Russell Blake, John Sandford, James Rollins, A. G. Riddle, Lance Charnes, the list just goes on and on…

About the Author
His near-death experiences range from talking a jealous husband into putting the gun down to spinning out on an icy freeway in heavy traffic without touching anything. His resume ranges from washing dishes to global technology management. His personal life stretches from homeless at 17, adopting a 3-year-old at 19, getting married at 37, fathering his last child at 43, hiking the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim at 59, and taking the occasional nap.
His writing career ranges from humble beginnings with short stories in The Battered Suitcase, to being awarded a Medallion from the Book Readers Appreciation Group. Seeley is best known for his Sabel Security series of thrillers featuring athlete and heiress Pia Sabel and her bodyguard, the mentally unstable veteran Jacob Stearne. One of them kicks ass and the other talks to the wrong god.
His love of creativity began at an early age, growing up at Frank Lloyd Wright's School of Architecture in Arizona and Wisconsin. He carried his imagination first into a successful career in sales and marketing, and then to his real love: fiction.

Good SuperLady Thriller

I see other reviewers have done a good job characterizing the book, leaving little for me to do but briefly summarize those elements with which I agree. On the scale of reality for modern private- eyes, with the creations of Sue Grafton pretty much at the more reality oriented and all those beautiful, sexy, martial arts trained, out-shoot and out-gun any living man (yet with genius level intelligence and degrees in nuclear physics from MIT and a Chair in the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton) at the fantasy oriented, I would put Pia, this book's heroine, definitely on the fantasy side of center but not all the way to that end of the scale. Nothing illegitimate about that choice of the author, who surely has the right to write the novel he wants not what you or I might prefer. The point is to forewarn the potential reader that this is a completely action-oriented thriller and not a thoughtful probing of character and situation nor a Toby Peters PI who is as likely to take a beating any time he gets involved with a suspect (or his older brother) than to whack the living daylights out of him.
Within these parameters, without repeating the details which are amply presented in many of the thoroughgoing and useful previous reviews, I pretty much enjoyed the book for what it was trying to be although that is not my favored form of mystery-thriller reading. I do think the author has to correct his over-use of his heroines bodily training as a sports queen, particularly the same phrases for her way with her feet, butting heads and slamming people in the throat (among other things). He would probably lend a greater verisimilitude to the work if the police were not made out to be quite the keystone cops variety that he portrays and his heroine quite the invincible foe he says she isn't but shows her as being.
At any rate, I think that readers who share the preference for such heroines, as manifest by TV and film ratings, will find this book right down their alley. Other thriller readers should find it a good beginning to a hoped-for series. 'Who Dun It' mystery readers, seeking a puzzle solving detective, should pause and evaluate before approaching this one. There is a 'Who Dun It' element, as in most thrillers, but that is not a feature given much real prominence.
In the interest of full-disclosure, I should add that the author, quite legitimately, offered a free copy of the book which I refused as a matter of policy (for reasons other than concern that it would affect my review or that of anyone else).

Reads more like a screen play for an Action film

The novel starts out promisingly, with the assassination of a Swiss banker in Geneva right in the beginning. Pia Sabel, the protagonist, gets into action by intercepting the assassin adroitly but he manages to escape. Pia has inherited the business firm of Sabel Security from her millionaire father. Pia's colleagues, who are battle-hardened veterans in the field, resent her as the rich daughter becoming the boss in spite of having absolutely no experience in the business of personal security. But Pia is a proud and accomplished girl. So, she has a thing or two to prove and this urge of hers takes the story from Geneva to Lyon and then on to the jungles of Cameroon in Central Africa. All this happens in the first 50 pages and I thought it is going to be a gripping story, unravelling the mystery of the murders of all the four bankers in Geneva earlier. Unfortunately, the rest of the book disappoints. The narrative drags on once they get to Cameroon. The extensive descriptions of boat chases, fights, gun battles and martial art skills made me lose interest. It felt as though it was written as a screen play for an action-adventure film. Stuff that happens in a movie in 30 seconds takes some 250 words to describe in a book. As a consequence, there isn't much movement in the unravelling of the murders till we come to the final 70 pages. In the end, we get to know who killed the bankers and who organized the heinous act but there isn't enough shock-value to save the novel.
The action takes place in exotic locales in Switzerland, France and Africa. Such a setting adds value only when it is visualized in some way or other, such as in a film or TV serial. The reader, however, is more focussed on the crime and the intrigue and simply tends to skim over these descriptions.
As far as character development goes, the one on whom a lot of focus occurs is Pia Sabel. Her portrayal reminded me somewhat of Steig Larsson's over-the-top portrayal of Lisbeth Salander in his second book 'The Girl who Played with Fire'. In that book, Lisbeth was indestructible in spite of being buried alive and committing many blunders which should have killed her. But she survives. It felt as though Larsson was getting carried away by his own heroine. Here too, Pia Sabel is indestructible in spite of finding herself in dire straits through her own lack of experience. She is a multi-faceted personality. She is a world class soccer player with hot looks, compassionate and generous towards the deprived people of the world, a trained boxer and a supremely confident individual. Not only that, she is also able to translate her knowledge of soccer tackles and feints and flips into life-saving devices against professional, hired assassins in their own dens. It stretches one's credibility and made me feel as though I am watching a Bond movie.
I felt that the plot was not developed well enough to sustain my interest. Had there been more insight into the world of the Swiss finance industry, its secrecy codes, its linkages with international crime and the politics behind piracy on the high seas, then it would have felt a lot more like a gripping crime novel. Unfortunately, this is not so.
I chanced to read this book, courtesy of the author sending me a free copy for review. I am sorry to say that I didn't dig the book. I wish him well in his future efforts.

Fun thriller that introduces a neat character

Okay, so it's not all that realistic, but it is fun. She's no Jason Bourne, but the ridiculous things she does are entertaining.
The Good: Pia Sabel's an interesting addition to the thriller/ mystery community of characters. She's a super rich "kid" (25) who happens to be a world famous soccer (ahem, sorry, footballer) star. Her dad, Alan Sabel, gave her control of his security company, hoping she'd take the desk job/ wine-and-dine the potential customers approach, but Pia's got other plans. Pia's an awesome character.
I like that there's a wider mystery about what happened to Pia's birth parents. From some points of view, it might seem rather cliché, but just because it's all been done before, doesn't mean it's not still an effective way of deepening her character.
Could be Better:
Some character voices were not consistent. Tania especially comes to mind, though seeing as she's supposed to be slightly mentally unstable, that might have been on purpose. (I do think her attitude toward Pia was well developed throughout the story.)
Most of the book is fairly clean in terms of strong language, but then, that's broken by pages where nearly every other word is something 4 letters and foul. It just got tedious.
Most of the characters are kind of flat, even the Major. I don't even remember her name. Normally, flat characters wouldn't be a problem, but with Pia being so realistic/ lifelike (even in the unrealistic, storybook-ish way), it's just sort of sad that not everybody comes across like that. This is especially true because not all the characters live, but I just didn't care enough about them to have an emotional response.
Indie books are sometimes hit or miss. I count this a hit. It's readable, interesting, and filled with a good mix of action and character development.
Conclusion: There were a lot of characters, and the overall mystery seemed at once overly complicated and too simplistic. That said, I like how Pia handles life and death situations. She tends to just wade in swinging. It's refreshing.
