Confronted with an intolerable marriage to a man she cannot abide, Caprice Lambert decides to take refuge with her childhood friend and flees to Dorset and sanctuary. Dressed as a stableboy, she is determined not to return until her parents see reason and abandon their ridiculous plans. But things go sadly awry when, upon arriving at what she thinks is her destination, she finds herself in the wrong house entirely.
What initally seems like a disaster actually works out far better than she'd anticipated for she is discovered by the delightfully eligible Lord Merridew, a man beset by a multitude of problems. In her guise as stableboy, Caprice finds her help enlisted as his lordship battles dubious relatives, French spies and the unexpected appearance of a body. It's challenging, but it all fades into nothing next to her growing attraction to the man. It hardly seems fair that, the one time she meets somebody who might be able to steal her heart, she is stuck in a pair of breeches and looking like a street urchin!
But the situation changes when his lordship discovers her secret and realizes the boy he has come to trust is actually female and has been lying to him all along. And worse still, he cannot keep his hands off the lady. Caprice can tolerate being Lord Merridew's servant but she cannot abide his displeasure and is desperate to explain her circumstances.
Can Caprice come about? Or will she find that this time, bold deeds and a headstrong manner cannot save the day...

Mystery and Madness

What a story I enjoyed ever minute of it. This story was not lacking in any way. The story had mystery, murder, insane sheinanigans and don't forget romance. I couldn't put this book down I was so intrigued by the well written story line. I love to read stories that are thrilling and suspenseful. I think the estate and its creepy decor, secret passages, hidden tunnels under the estate and the weird house guest and bonus a young lady dressing up disguise as a stable boy running from her family made this book even more interesting.
My favorite part is where Caprice is alone in the the dark and creepy cellar with only a wax candle for light waiting for Cass to come back when she hears a noise and hides behind some luggage boxes. Well with the candlelight she moves to look around her surrounds to find a dead body and she screams bloody murder. Bringing Cass running back to her. Oh did I mention that she is disguised as a stable boy going by the name Jem Morris and has everyone in the story believing that she is a young teenage boy. This book is well worth a second read.

This was really fun

I am totally enjoying this authors books. The plots are fast paced, interesting and suitably mysterious, without being saturated in sex and violence. The characters are quirky and the romantic relationship interesting. This story about a girl running away from one man into a unsafe spy ridden situation has enough twists and turns to satisfy anyone who likes a tale well told.

Good story, but...

The premise of the story is good, but requires quite a bit of suspension of belief for the time period. The editing (or lack of) was distracting.
