The Event (Studies in Continental Thought), by Martin Heidegger

Martin Heidegger’s The Event offers his most substantial self-critique of his Contributions to Philosophy: Of the Event and articulates what he means by the event itself. Richard Rojcewicz’s elegant translation offers the English-speaking reader intimate contact with one of the most basic Heideggerian concepts. This book lays out how the event is to be understood and ties it closely to looking, showing, self-manifestation, and the self-unveiling of the gods. The Event (Complete Works, volume 71) is part of a series of Heidegger's private writings in response to Contributions.

Review

"The Event takes the reader who is willing to follow the intricacies of Heidegger's text, into dark and impenetrable dimensions of thought and experience at the limits of language and intelligibility." ―Review of Metaphysics

"Heidegger is struggling to articulate his thinking, and many sections in this work are illuminating to some of his most difficult discussions in the Contributions and his thinking about Greek metaphysics, language, and poetry and philosophy." ―Phillip Braunstein, Loyola Marymount University

"What is most remarkable about Richard Rojcewicz’s translation is its timeliness.... As a translation, the volume is better than fine and it has no doubt benefitted from Rojcewicz and Vallega-Neu’s translation of Beiträge zur Philosophie (Vom Ereignis)." ―Continental Philosophy Review

An extremely different way of translating Heidegger's Ereignis period
By lenazifrog
This reads much differently than Emad and Maly's translations of 'Contributions' and 'Mindfulness', the two books directly preceding this one.

I'd say that this book is at once more cryptic and less rigorous than the two other big books. 'Mindfulness' is very much like 'Contributions', but it is smarter and is essentially a comprehensive review of 'Contributions'. This book behaves as if it wants to transcend both of them. It certainly does this linguistically. This guy's translation is not an attempt to directly translate the German words themselves and even though the method employed is different, I detected a further radicalization of thinking. It is excrutiatingly difficult to convey what exactly 'radicalization' means for Heidegger in the early 40's.

Frankly, I learned through Emad and Maly and so I approve of their translations. Another translation of 'Contributions' is inevitable, there will probably be more. One of the most striking differences in the two current translational methods for this period in Heidegger's life are Emad/Maly's decision to render Abgrund as 'Ab-ground' and Rojcewicz's choice of 'Abyss'. Abyss is thematically truer but for those uninitiated 'Abyss' can acquire all sorts of misunderstandings. Heidegger's 'abyss' is not an abyss in any traditional religious sense; it is more abyssal still. This choice also means Rojcewicz has abandoned the peculiar etymological relationship between core words which Heidegger empoyed at this time, a relationshiop that Maly/Emad try to follow with the English language to a perplexing degree but which created incisive paragraphs.

I absolutely don't recommend spending money on this until you've properly understood 'Contributions' and 'Mindfulness'. That can take well over a year. A student really has begin studying Martin Heidegger's teachings from at least 'Being and Time' to understand anything. Translationally, this book is more 'thematic' than the previous ones, in that it comments upon ideas that have been established long before.

Difficult
By Reece Thomas Harris
Ad astra per aspera. . . or ta kala kalapa-- "beautiful things are difficult." You will have to work very hard to get something from this book and it does require some previous years of asking the question "what does it mean to be." In the end, if you are unrelenting in your practice, which is a kind of meditative practice, the book may open realms for you that might be decisive for the kind of life you live.

really not mystical gobbledygook
By Amazon Customer
Very deep, very hard and yet profoundly valuable. I'd recommend you warm up by studying "Being and Time", or at least "The History of the Concept of Time". If not, you probably won't have a clue about what he's actually talking about, and it will seem like so much inaccessible mystical gobbledygook.
