Our hearts are restless till they rest in God (St Augustine)
By trini
Review of Real Scientists Real Faith, ed. Berry. Revised 21st July 2009

The point of the author of each of the 17 tightly-packed autobiographies (about 15 pages each) in this book is first of all a simple and explicit declaration that in his or her life there is no clash whatever between the author's religious faith (Christianity, in every case here) and career in science (high-level research and professorships, in medicine, genetics, psychiatry, environmental studies, geology, nanotechnology, biochemistry, ... (There is only one woman contributor, Joan Centrella, an astrophysicist at NASA's Goddard Space Centre, where she is head of the Gravitational Astrophysics Laboratory; so hereafter, for simplicity, I shall use only `he' and `his' - my apologies to Joan)

Secondly, each author describes either how he maintained his childhood and adolescent Christian faith in the (usually) overtly or covertly hostile atmosphere of university and professional scientific life, or else, as is quite often the case, came fresh to adult Christian faith during his studies or career in science, after a lapse from early Christianity or else from a totally agnostic or atheistic background.

There is no single route, in the detail, from unbelief to belief. It is nonetheless true that in every case the `convert' came eventually to see that faith in a Creator God (and in a suffering and resurrected divine Redeemer), and knowing and living the Revealed Word of God, is wholly compatible with the other revealed word of God which mankind comes to know through the scientific investigation of the material world around us. Not only is there no clash, but `natural' science and religious belief complement, complete each other.

The true human being, the true scholar, takes account of all reality - and all reality is not exhausted by what can be seen through the microscope or in the fossil record. These scientific resources simply do not even begin to explain the splendour of mankind, which is indeed the pinnacle of God's creation. There is a void in every human heart that only God can fill, though not everyone, it must be admitted, realises how the human being is short-changed when his aspirations are limited to the Darwinist idea that man is just another ape. This contact with the divine is more than a mere realization that Darwinism does not explain everything; but for many of the scientists who write in this book the start of the ascent to the divine is precisely that realization: there is more to mankind than genes that have evolved from mere matter (and, as many see also, where, anyhow, does that `mere matter' come from? It too calls for a Creator).

The English Catholic poet Francis Thompson (1859-1907) poeticized the understanding of this human need for `more' than matter can offer, for a reality that transcends the microscope and the fossil, in his poem `In No Strange Land:
O world invisible, we view thee,
O world intangible, we touch thee,
O world unknowable, we know thee,
Inapprehensible, we clutch thee!

In his much longer poem `The Hound of Heaven' (1887), Thompson represents God as the Hound pursuing the weak human being, who tries to escape from the divine pursuit:

"Ah, fondest, blindest, weakest,
I am He Whom thou seekest!
Thou dravest love from thee, who dravest Me."

This magnificent poem (please read it in full - available on google) is a worthy reformulation of the immortal words of the fifth-century St Augustine: "Thou hast made us for Thyself, O God, and our hearts are restless till they rest in Thee."

A noteworthy feature of these biographies is that at least five of them testify that the writings of CS Lewis were instrumental in drawing them to Christianity, once they felt the need to look beyond the microscope, because the microscope did not and could not explain man's unique characteristics, and did not and could not provide a purpose in life - and these thinkers could not accept that there was no purpose to life.

I pick out two contributions. The first, because of the prestige of its author, is that of Francis Collins, for fifteen years head of the Human Genome Research Institute, who saw its work through to the publication of the full human genome. Collins has published a full-length book on his spiritual odyssey, called The Language of God (2006). In his short testimony here, he credits as a powerful argument, in his search `beyond the microscope', CS Lewis's argument that the existence of the moral law must have an explanation outside of `matter'. Like many of the other writers, too, he is unabashed in his stress on `meeting Jesus' and living his life in the presence and with the guidance of Jesus.

My second personal choice is the testimony of John Wyatt, Professor of Neonatal Paediatrics and Consultant Neonatologist at University College London Hospital. I am deeply impressed by his argument that the human embryo is `human' from the very first instant of conception, and therefore not dispensable or destroyable as `surplus' in scientific research before some mysterious moment when the embryonic `matter' becomes `human': for Wyatt, the human being is not a `soul' infused at some time into a pre-existing `mere matter' body, but is absolutely defined in its essence as `at one and the same time, [a] fully physical and fully spiritual [being]" (page 202). (Do I hear echoes from my distant philosophical past of the human soul being indeed Aristotle's `form' informing `matter'?) This essay also includes powerful witness to the role of science, and powerful testimony that science cannot explain man. It is pure gold.

The selection of testimonies represents a range of detail in belief, with one or two adopting convinced Christian positions with regard to Christ, but other positions, in the field of morality, that are controversial.

My physicist friend really appreciated the chapter which described what it is like to be a scientist.
By W. Roundy
Each of the authors describes a little of how his science and his faith work together in his experience. A Christian may not agree with each idea of each of the scientists, but each account provides some things to think about.

"Delight in Creation: Scientists Share Their Work with the Church" might be of interest to some who are interested in "Real Scientists..."

I enjoyed and appreciated this book.
