For decades, the magical race of shapeshifters called the Cheysuli have been feared and hated exiles in their own land, a land they rightfully should rule.  Victims of a vengeful monarch's war of annihilation and a usurper king's tyrannical reign, the Cheysuli clans have nearly vanished from the world.
Now in the aftermath of the revolution which overthrew the hated tyrant, Prince Donal is being trained as the first Cheysuli in generations to assume the throne. But will he be able to overcome the prejudice of a populace afraid of his special magic and succeed in uniting the realm in its life and death battle against enemy armies and evil magicians?

This series is just as fun now as when I read it 10 years ago.

Do I keep reading or not?
By Joseph McCauley
Jennifer Roberson's "Chronicles of the Cheysuli" series came highly recommended by two people whose opinions I respect, enough that I sprung for all eight books. After making it through "Legacy of the Sword", the third book, all I can say is that tastes vary. This one is simply not working out for me.
"Legacy of the Sword" focuses on Donal (son of Alix and Duncan) as the central character. Donal is of primarily Cheysuli descent, but has been designated as successor to the Lion Throne of Homana, currently held by Carillon. Donal considers himself unworthy to follow in the footsteps of Carillon, and as the first Cheysuli to hold the throne in four hundred years, he has a considerable struggle of identity between his Homanan role and his Cheysuli heritage. There are, of course the wars with some of Homana's neighbors, and the struggles with the Ihlini, the sorcerers who wish to control Homana.
This book, and the series as a whole so far, pushes the limits on having bad things happen, with it seems too little payoff for the struggles our protagonists must endure. We anticipate truimph for Donal all the way through the book, yet in the final pages of this book he does something that left me feeling like he'd turned his back on all he was, had let his position take precedence over his identity. With five books still to go in the series, I'm trying to decide whether it's worth my time to read them.

The Cheysuli series is an epic adventure fantasy series about a mystic nature-loving group of shape shifters who are persecuted by norms and evil demon-worshiping sorcerers. It is also about `fate' and the destiny of these races.

This story continues the tale of Carilon, Finn, and Donal, Ducan's son.

Donal is not my favorite character, mostly because at the beginning of the story Donal is quite reluctant. Reluctant to marry, reluctant to rule, etc. This is understandable but not very interesting. Donal is also rather well encumbered at the beginning of the story too, and his interests so well established, that I didn't feel any excitement about his personal life. I like to feel the tug of romance, and interest in the characters, and Donal's romance with Sorcha was six or seven years established at the beginning of the story, that I didn't feel much excitement in the love triangle that ensued. However, I did feel the author gets points for addressing the idea that royal marriages were seldom about love, and that characters might have other attachments.

There were several difficult elements in the story, that made this a hard book to read. Mostly it involved Donal's fiancée who has been ensorcelled by her mother. At one point there is a rape that occurs which was distasteful.

Third. I was kind of repelled that when Donal feels unclean he does a magic ritual and eats a raw wolf heart. Not sure why that bugged me so much, other than that I felt repelled. Guess I'm a softy about animals, but it seemed odd to me, given his close relationship with his Lir who is also a wolf.

For some reason I like these books, despite not being too much of a fan of Donal. There is something compelling about the Cheysuli- I like them and their special bond with forest animals. I'm interested in their lives, and history, I just wish Donal was a touch more likeable.
