Becoming Red (The Becoming Novels)
By Zephyr Book Reviews
I just finished a little bit of a reading binge. I have been reading this book for a few days and kept having to put it down for one reason or another. I finally just put my foot down and decided I would keep reading until it was finished. Now its almost 4 in the morning and I'm feeling little put out.
Ash has a few horrible nightmares following her around. Doctors told her everything she remembers from a traumatic childhood isn't real. When she is awake she can believe that, but when the lure of sleep becomes to much the truth tries to reveal itself in her dreams. When her grandmother suffers a stroke Ash rushes off to Dublin to handle her estate. He nightmares start making more sense to her, and she meets Connel who brings out a side of herself that she didn't think was possible.
The beginning of this book is so confusing, and it doesn't get much better the more you read. Having names thrown at me when I didn't know who these people were was horrible it made me feel like I missed reading a book somewhere before I started this one. The way Ash thought was like she was constantly tripping out on some crazy drug. But it wasn't just her thoughts that were like that. . .it was every ones. I felt like I missed out on the high every one around me somehow found and I was sitting there watching them all talk gibberish to each other.
I'm someone that absolutely loves point of view shifts, but only when they are done smoothly. You shifted from Ash's thoughts to Connels constantly. It was really confusing when you would see from Connels point of view then switch over to Ash's and she would replay the same thing. I would be like "didn't I already read this?"
The sex sense were hot, but with the same tripping thoughts. Sometimes I wasn't even sure if they were getting it on or not. Though it all came across as very poetic, it just didn't work for me.
I didn't like how it felt that I should already know a lot of the mythology that was put out there either, and by the time it was explained I was half way through and just didn't care anymore. I noticed at the end of the read there was a glossary, I'm sure this would have helped me out tons if I had know it was there.
I'm still not really sure what this book was suppose to be about. I thought a few times it was going to run the lines of the fairy tale Little Red Ridding Hood, but except for a couple of references it didn't go that way.
The only saving grace for this book was the sexy parts, and the emotional turmoil that takes part towards the end. I actually started to care what was going to happen with Ash and Connel, and then the book ended and it turned out to be a little to late for me.
Would I recommend this book? I hate to say it but no. This book fell flat for me in a lot of ways.

Confusing beginning but stick with it...
By Chattykat
I was really close to putting this in the did not finish pile at about 20%... but, something compelled me to continue and I'm really glad that I did. I think I fell a little in love with "Little Red" and "Big Bad". And, there were some seriously steamy moments between these two that completely got my attention.
The first part of the book was overly descriptive and it distracted me from the story itself. And, I'll be honest... some of the choice words and phrases that were being used in these descriptions were over thought and unnecessary. Having to filter through all of the poetic language and adjectives made it confusing.
But, as we approached about the 30% mark (I think) the tone of the writing changed. All of a sudden I found the story easier to follow and it all started to make sense. And, after that I couldn't put the book down.
This is a story about a unique race of wolf shifters who live underground in Ireland. Extinct of their female population and only able to come above ground during the full moon and under the magic of the red fog... they use this opportunity to traffic human females into the underground through their poisonous bites. But, this does not satisfy their need to re-populate as human females are not good for breeding only pleasure.
In comes Little Red... yep, she's different... and suddenly she's gained an entire population of suitors. Luckily, she has Big Bad on her side but, keeping her safe and protected isn't easy.
I found this to be a very original and intense story with very interesting and engaging characters. And, most of all it did leave me wanting more by the end.
This book ends on a gigantic cliffhanger... but, no worries... book two is here... :) And, I guess I better hurry up and read it because I'm on the edge of my seat.
It really is a good story if you stick with it. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on this/these authors. There is definitely potential and I predict/hope this series will continue to improve with book two.

Hold on for one wild ride!

Wow! I have so much to say about this and I have no idea where to begin. I struggled with what rating to give this book. When I first started reading, I was convinced this book would be lucky to get 2 stars from me, but now here I am trying to decide whether it deserves 4 or 5. This was one wild ride.
Okay, let's start with the technical stuff: grammatically and structurally the story was great. It was clean and crisp. There were many times that multiple question marks and exclamation points ended dialogue. (!!!!, ???, and ?!?!) Piling on the punctuation doesn't make what is being said more powerful. It's just plain annoying.
It was a bit repetitive in the descriptions with the same idea being presented in different ways within the same sentence. Take this line, for example: "Pulling the cork in his teeth, he necked the bottle and swallowed back a long draft, pouring the fiery, numbing torrent down his throat." Isn't 'swallowed back a long draft' and' pouring the fiery numbing torrent down his throat' the same exact thing said in a different manner?
Also, there were a lot of the same descriptive words were used quite frequently as well--sometimes as often and three or four times in the same paragraph. In addition I felt the descriptions themselves were a bit over the top and felt as if the authors were trying too hard to get the point across. Another example: "Her breath was still coming harsh, ragged with the embers of lust clinging to sensations that had ripped through her ice queen impression like flaming lightning." Uhhh...yeah...okay...sure.
A ridiculous amount of head hopping was going on as well. Now, normally this would irritate the crap out of me and would result in one less Kick to the Heart. However, it was very clear to me that all this POV switching was done intentionally and not as a result of poor or inexperienced writing. Furthermore, it was handled seamlessly and not jarring in the least. It bears mentioning, but didn't affect my rating all that much.In fact, I'll venture to say I enjoyed all the different POV's.
All of the things I've mentioned above are very minor. But, I had two major issues with this book which led to a reduced rating:
(1) There were pages and pages and pages and pages and pages of narrative. My eyes would roll as I scrolled through the pages at the sheer amount of narrative. In the back of my mind I was thinking, "Good God is it over yet?" I seriously skimmed through pages at a time and I didn't miss anything real important. Several times I almost quit reading with the intent of sending the authors a polite email thanking them for the opportunity to read their work but it just wasn't a fit for me...blah, blah, blah. (MAN, am I glad I didn't to that! More on that below.) Now, maybe I'm completely off track here and it's acceptable and/or required in this genre to have an abundance of narrative.
(2) For me, this story didn't start until Chapter 14/15 when....(MILD SPOILERS AHEAD) Ashling is attacked by a pack of wild dogs and goes to the emergency room. This is where it started to get good and this is where I stopped skimming over the narrative and began to get swept away in the story. The first 13 chapters were a waste of my time and added nothing to the story, in my opinion. An argument could be made that some of the information was necessary, but not 13 chapters worth. It could be condensed to half that and be a much stronger story.
Once I got past all that stuff in the beginning, I could NOT put this book down. I fell in love with Ashling and Connal. I was rooting for both of them throughout and yes, I even cried. Three times. I was shocked by some of the twists that the plot took. My mind is still reeling over this story. And the ending? I'm both shocked, worried, and angry! It's a horribly brilliant way to end this book. It definitely leaves you wanting to drop everything and go grab book two.
